This is my favourite spot in the fens 10 minutes from home. In this picture the fen is frozen over and we could iceskate on it. Just a perfect surrounding to skate in ♥️.

Just came back from a walk through the fens near my home. They are covered with a thin layer of ice. The clouds were also interesting today.

A fen with absolute still water. In the front of the water lies a broken off brench from a tree. To the left, at the shore, are two trees in the shadow. The other side of the fen is bathed in the evening sun, lighting up white grass and pinetrees. All the trees are reflected in the perfectly still water. The sky is clear blue.

Frozen water with a thin layer of snow and marks from people who have skated on it. In the background on the left a row of leafless trees and on the right a row of pinetrees that are a bit higher than the trees on the left. The sun is behind thin clouds in the middle, leaving a beam of light on the frozen water which illuminates the ice. A dead tree with two brenches standing right up is a little to the left of the picture at the other side of the water.

The sun is setting above a row of leafless trees in the background. In front of the trees is a lake with golden reed in the front. In the upper right corner we see a leafless branch from a tree. The sky is clear. Close-up of little purple flowers that are closed. The sun shines through the green leaves that are at the base. There's also some brown leaves around. There's a group of 4 flowers in the middle and a bunch of them on the right. In the background we see trees and bushes. A dirtroad with some pinetrees on the left. At the end of the road are two leafless trees. On the right of the road we see green moss and more trees. The shadows go from left to right. The sky is clear. A rowingboat placed horizontally in the water. There's a pole sticking out of the water in front of it and behind it two more. There are some more boats in the background. At the dock, on the right there is some grass illumimated by the sun. Behind the water we see trees. The sky is clear with the sun on the right.

Tucked Away This pastel drawing ‘Hatert Meres (Hatertse Vennen) 03 (2013) (Sold)’ is in honor of a great nature reserve just below Nijmegen. Tucked away between the outer skirts of my beloved city where I come from and Overasselt near the river Maas. Full of little meres, heather, swamps and forested areas. When I was a child I often visited it with my parents. Not in the last place because after a walk we went to the pancake restaurant smack in the middle. It’s managed by family members and a sort of a family meeting point for weddings, reunions and funeral after parties. Anyway, the treat was to go there after a good walk through the woods. That’s why I cherish my memories of trees: they’ve always meant something delicious was nearby. Altered Landscape That was a long time ago. I moved to the west (South Holland) to study and became a lawyer. Then a struggling artist of course which I’m not anymore, rewriting this art statement in 2025. In 2013 my dad and I went back to revisit The Hatertse Vennen (Hatert Meres) once more. He claimed there was a lot of wood chopping going on. It turns out municipal authorities wanted to restore the district to its former glory. Less wood, more heather and open spaces. My dad and I never knew this original outlook. Apparently more than a century ago it looked rather different. The result is a more various landscape you can see in the very pastel at hand. Razor Light I had it in my to do this one competely impressionistic. Last pastel I made on the subject was a quite alright but I prefer this one. That’s because the sun razors through the leafy structures and that’s always nice, creating a more dramatic look. Blueish structures in the back, warmer colors and more definition of the heather in the front. The pastel almost drew itself. Fun to make and I sold it quickly. More Light An impressionistic pastel of the sun setting through the trees at the Hatertse Vennen (Hatert Meres), Gelderland, Nederland. After the last one I wanted to show more sunlight because I felt that was missing. Landscapes can look very bland, almost greyish if there is a neutral lighting caused by a full or partial cloud cover. Monet’s Statement I fully concur with what Monet used to say: “I do not paint objects but the light around them”. Since then I prefer treescapes like these ‘contrejour’ (against daylight). The risk one faces is that the subject becomes blackened but in this particular case the sun already was setting so the landscape was not overlit. Colors For a brief moment I had the opportunity to study the color scheme of the tree trunks in the shadow, colors of the leafs and the golden light beams shining and shimmering through. Of course there was not enough time to capture it at the very spot but I remembered it and elaborated it on pastel paper in the confort of my studio. Instructional This pastel became instructional for my students to whom I can show how treetops shift in color because they do not have a lot of mass and are very thin. The light almost tends to bow around them and light in treetops becomes shattered, shining more intense than at the bottom of the tree. Therefor the trunk below is dark, shows blues, purples and greens and up in the tree you can see pinks, oranges, yellows and lilacs. Same wood, different colors.
