Hail to the #HedgeBedstraw!
Big & blousy, it's been thriving on my #allotment for years & where many insects love it beyond it being a vital nectar or food plant. Some use it 2 snooze in, others to bask or roost on, while others give it the greatest honour .. by breeding on it.

It was definitely #FieldScabious time on a much cooler #allotment this morning, with #BlackKnapweed, #MeadowGeranium & #HedgeBedstraw serving as the backing band to all the insect visitors with Field Poppy on drums.

Great harmony ensued 😊

Had 2 lovely visitors on #allotment today: one from abroad too speedy to capture well on camera but was clearly interested in the #HedgeBedstraw .. please stay🙏 #HummingbirdHawk-moth; + one that was trying to impersonate a Pantaloon bee but was my old mate, #Wilke'sMiningbee, a female.

Tried cutting back #TallWeeds in my #DrainageDitch today using an extended reach #HedgeTrimmer as per online advice (Fail!) so went back with a normal string trimmer (Fair!). These are a couple of photos - #Solanum and #HedgeBedstraw
Solanum Crispin Glasnevin (a variety of Chilean Nightshade or Potato Vine) growing out of an old tree bole Hedge Bedstraw displacing tall weeds from the ditch. There are myriads of tiny whitish flowers on finely branched stems

August 2023 Mrs HBHM, to my surprise and delight, decided my south facing house was a suitable site for her to leave her precious eggs. Gallium (Hedgebedstraw) had self seeded at the base of the wall. In this shot her wings are spread wide open and her lower abdomen bent towards the wall. Here she's flown backwards, abdomen still a little bent into the oviposit position. The tiny round, green egg is just below the centre of the right wing. Sadly none of her 4 eggs survived and I didn't find any she'd laid in the Gallium. A shot showing the incredibly long proboscis (tongue). The day flying moth is hovering beside the buddleia, several inches away but had prefectly positioned the proboscis so it can feed. They move very quickly, rarely still for more than a few seconds. This is one of my favourite HBHM shots using the pro cap setting of my OM1 camera, f8 1/2500. It's taken from below showing the pale grey chest and black & white horizontal stripes of the lower body. The wings are fully open, orange close to the body, the rest a darker dull orange brown.

27 plants flowering now in our intentionally wild, autumn-come-early garden, Durham UK: musk mallow, chicory, St John's wort, bird's foot trefoil, knapweed, marjoram, forget-me-not, yarrow, watermint, gypsywort, purpleloosestrife, camomile, hop trefoil, clover, viper's bugloss, hedgebedstraw, borage
Autumn has come early and bees and pollinators have fewer plants on their foraging trails. This snap was taken one summer a few years ago in the garden. We have introduced more native wildflowers: pond plants, meadow plants since then.
