Without googling, do you know what the the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) is?

All this ignores what had been the standard anti-trust metric, the Herfindahl–Hirschman index. By its measure, ALL these industries operate in uncompetitive markets: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herfind...

Here’s what we’re talking about. This academic is using the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI), which apparently measures market concentration www.investopedia.com/terms/h/hhi..... 2500 or above is considered highly concentrated

In economics terms, the reciprocal of the herfindahl-hirschman index. So effectively a measure of market concentration rescaled back to units of parties en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effecti...

In numbers:

➡ Industries with top 8 firms under reporting obligations, became 2.6 percentage points less concentrated.

➡ Using the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index yields similar results.

These are the first empirical estimates linking tax compliance directly to market structure.

UK cities with higher industrial concentration in 1881 had more unskilled workers in 1971, and much lower average wages in 2020.

😆 My transcript wrote “empirical base” for “empirical Bayes” and urban Dale for Herfindahl (whose first name is not Dale but Orris!).

Herfindahl–Hirschman Index (HHI) calculates how centralized a protocol has become by adding the squares of providers' usage share percentages.
- Fediverse is 748 by instance or 3952 by server software, and ATmosphere is 9684
- Web hosting is 744, and Git hosting is 9224

17/32 Regional Final slots for the Power2 (53%). 5 for ACC and 4 for BIG12. That’s 26/32 (81%) for previous P4. (I don’t need Herfindahl for this one.)

Marktkonzentrationsindizes

HHI (Herfindahl-Hirschman-Index): zeigt, ob wenige Anbieter dominieren.

RSI (Residual Supply Index): misst, ob die Nachfrage auch ohne den größten Anbieter gedeckt werden könnte. Werte < 1 deuten auf Marktmacht hin.

There's actually a neat connection between entropy and economics: the Herfindahl–Hirschman index. If you take the reciprocal of the HHI then log it, it should be exactly equal to the Renyi entropy (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%A9...).

DESNZ's 2025 competition statistics show domestic electricity supply concentrating fast: the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index, a concentration score from 0 to 10,000, rose from 1,190.97 in 2023 to 1,616.52

E.g. the Herfindahl index (concentration) of the academic affiliation of #Nobel laureats in #Chemistry, #Physics and #Medicine has been declining, while in #economics it has been shockingly increasing ---with half of the laureates’ academic time spent at only 3.3% of all institutions with awards.

"Economics has an elitism problem." Ya think?

(HHI = Herfindahl-Hirschman Index value, commonly used to measure industries' concentration of firms, for example.)

You need landlords who, together control like 20-30% of a market to meaningfully impact prices. You need much larger scale collusion to enter monopoly territory than your SF example. DOJ considers a market with an HHI of less than 1,500 to be competitive. See: www.investopedia.com/terms/h/hhi....
