Stolpersteine, "stumbling stones," mark the last home of victims of the Holocaust. In Rome's Biblioteca Hertziana there's also a Stolperschachtel - a stumbling folder - to draw attention to the German institute's expulsion of the scholar Ludwig Pollak in 1935 in an act of grim forshadowing.

Could there be a library with a more fantastic doorway than this? The 16th-century monster face entrance of the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome used to open to a garden, these days it leads into the Max Planck Institute art history library. Lucky, lucky art historians. 🗃️
