Here’s my response to Tech Bro Joe Lonsdale’s attempt to blame our “heterogenous population”—rather than “gun rights” run amok—for the scourge of gun violence in America. 1/ x.com/jennycohn1/s...

I love being part of a friend group and community of gender-marginalized people that is heterogenous and composed of politically aligned people who all see how our struggles are interlinked without ranking, tiering, or reductively collapsing our unique issues.

More of you should try that.

saying this not as a dig to Paul but as a general point, but it does worry me that we've ended up in a world where the two options are seemingly "leftist bubble" or "oh hey the nazis are here" - surely we should be able to have a politically heterogenous platform with tight rules on hate speech etc?
The new CEO of Bluesky wants to change Bluesky from being a leftist bubble. The thing is, there’s nothing wrong with being a leftist bubble: the idea that everything has to be all-encompassing and suitable for everyone is a trap. 🧵 1/4

“Overall, the European donor base spans a heterogenous alliance of moneyed aristocrats, ultra-conservative tech entrepreneurs, and ideologically aligned businesses.“
Inside Europe’s billion-dollar anti-gender movement

A new report reveals how groups critical of so-called gender ideology across Europe raised $1.18 billion to target abortion, sex education and LGBTQ+ rights.

the world's always been the world; cultures have always been heterogenous and diverse in influences, in peoples, and yes in skin color.

brian spent all damn day installing magnetic locks on all our kitchen cabinets and drawers which are plenty and heterogenous so that his mischievous sons which are also plenty and heterogenous couldn't do themselves a disservice with an immersion blender, please clap

look in real life a heterogenous friendgroup of eccentrics whose outer fringes can barely tolerate each other is always gonna turn out in the long run to be 100% gay/trans or 100% stand users
i'll put it on the to-do list

That’s not to say “Christianity is great actually”, it’s to say that Christianity is complicated and heterogenous and internally contested, which has always been the case

i will simply handle live transcoding for 10 million heterogenous devices in various network reliability states with a 5.7kW dryer outlet

The thing is that "gender studies" isn't really synonymous with "feminism", which is itself quite heterogenous.

Like. You'd be surprised how little some strains of feminism and gender studies have been vindicated, due to some pretty glaring and obvious oversights.

American's preferences are highly heterogenous and while there's evidence that a large majority might prefer suburban living, revealed preferences show that safe, high-amenity urban living is extremely undersupplied compared to demand.
Right, this is true, but the OVERWHELMING evidence of the past 100 years of American life is that vastly more people want space and a car than a smaller unit and a car-free lifestyle. This is mostly why the suburban share of US population has grown relentlessly for the entire 20th and 21st century
Some people put a premium on space in my experience, others put a premium on not having to have a car and not being isolated out in the suburbs

And way too many administrators are kidding themselves about how well one teacher can “meet the kids where they’re at” in a wildly heterogenous class.

The idea that treatment effects should be *expected* to be heterogenous is not new. Unfortunately, it seems pretty new to software.

One more point about this politicized interpretation: there's a difference between engaging fashion primarily as a means of telegraphing status, where everyone cops the same facelift or Valentino Rockstuds, versus fashion as a means of self-expression (pluralistic, heterogenous all can participate)

honestly might be good for small-guy security, as everything becomes ultra heterogenous

this is also the core appeal of learned league for me: finally something to DO with all that heterogenous and largely useless data
A fun thing about Learned League is that my head is so filled with useless knowledge that I just have these random facts floating around completely divorced from any semblance of context or memory of learning the facts themselves

"surely we should be able to have a politically heterogenous platform with tight rules on hate speech etc"

that's basically it right there - the right-wing now will actively reject "tight rules on hate speech". it's a deal breaker for them, across the vast majority of the political right.

I'm always walking down the street and seeing NHS workers who work in the field of data integration and analysis, wielding the Ontology to surface actionable insights from heterogenous datasets (you can always tell). 'Go back to the Shire you Hobbit bastard!' I yell at them.

…but are you not excited? We’re entering the heterogenous memory era (again)!

Imagine hundreds of terabytes of RAM on a single server!

Absolutely insane to think about.

October is #BreastCancerAwareness month.
As of 2024, 2.4M women worldwide received Herceptin. It also helped scientists realize that #breastcancer is heterogenous, paving the way for more targeted treatments. The 5 yr survival rate went from 75% in 1980 to 92%.
