On Nov. 6, 2011, while competing in Italy, Hickstead collapsed and died from an aortic rupture. In 2012, a statue of Hickstead was unveiled at Spruce Meadows in Calgary.
In 2020, Hickstead, with Eric Lamaze, was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.

Hickstead (1996 - 2011):

Inducted with his rider Eric Lamaze in 2021, Hickstead won Olympic gold and silver in Beijing, a bronze at the World Equestrian Games and a silver and bronze at the Pan American Games. He won over $4 million during his career.

Eventually, Eric Lamaze and Hickstead developed a strong bond that led to greatness. From 2007 to 2011, Hickstead won every major Grand Prix title in the world. In 2007, he won a silver in Team Jumping and a bronze in Individual Jumping at the Pan American Games.

In 2010, Hickstead was named Best Horse In The World at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. In 2011, he won three Grand Prix Titles, the Queen Elizabeth II Cup and the CN International title. Over the course of his equestrian career, Hickstead won $4 million.

The next year at the Summer Olympics, Hickstead won gold in Individual Jumping and silver in Team Jumping. This was the first Individual Jumping Olympic gold ever won by a Canadian horse, and the first equestrian gold medal for Canada since the 1968 Olympics.

In 2004, Eric Lamaze was on a buying trip in Belgium when he was introduced to Hickstead. At first, Lamaze found him to be difficult to ride as he was rebellious and did not like water obstacles. He was also undersized compared to other show jumping horses.

Hickstead was born on March 2, 1996 in Belgium and given the name Opel. This was changed to give him the same first initial as his father Hamlet. The name Hickstead came from his owner's favourite show-jumping centre in England. Everyone called him Sticks.
