("Oh, the Red Viburnum in the Meadow")
I wanted something with the kalyna (Viburnum opulus), one of Ukraine's national plants, on it. There is a related species in Canada (high bush cranberry) and it comforted Ukrainian immigrants arriving in the 19th-20th C

Autumn does bring some beautiful colours.

This arrived from Kyiv today. I continue to be amazed that Ukraine's postal system keeps moving stuff around the country, and to and from overseas destinations, even with ongoing attacks from Russian missiles, drones, etc.
"Oi u luzi chervona kalyna" is a patriotic Ukrainian song.

Nothing beats Highbush Blueberry Jam and preserves.

Blueberry preserves mixed with stuffing for literally any bird, especially ducks and ptarmigan....... hoooo boy what a treat

American persimmon is orange enough to be tempting, but still pretty solid & needs more time.

One lingonberry decided to be prolific this year, but we didn't get enough heat to fully ripen my singular pomegranate (pretty good extra tart though)

First tiny harvest of highbush cranberry.

also this reminds me of the last time I made Highbush Blueberry pie.

my dog is obsessed with bloobs. he'd pick them off of the plant when we'd go collecting on the Chugach.

I came home to a *TOTALLY CLEAN* pie dish on the floor.

next day he dropped a Bloop and the yard smelled like blueberry pie

I haven’t made homemade ketchup for quite some time, I should do that again soon. My neighbour gave me some highbush cranberry pulp so I’ll likely use that! 😋

2/3 "As a bird lover, it pains me to see so much of our park land taken over by a shrub that is deadly to songbirds, taking the space that could be home top a highbush cranberry, a service berry, or something else the birds would thrive on!

I organized a local community event to remove invasive...

Happy #Stunday!
A lovely morning hearing the geese honk and the squirrels chitter their mad little heads off 🐿️

noisy flocks, feasting on my neighbor’s highbush cranberries, the dogwood fruits, & the dark berries of my Portuguese laurel. 🪶 They gorge on the fruits, swallowing them whole, until nary a berry remains, and then they’re off again to some other yard to find more. CEWA rely almost entirely on a diet

I grew up in New England where fall smells like apple cider doughnuts, hay rides, and pumpkins.

I love Alaska’s fall smells of bear piss, rotting salmon, and that stale sweaty sock odor that highbush cranberries emit.

Good Monday morning. It's now 5:55 a.m., 59°F, with a dark pre-dawn sky.
My daily post today features photos from my phone's "My Art" file. Pictured are two progression photos of a branch of Highbush Cranberry (Viburnum trilobum) drawn with Prism colored pencils on a card stock note card.

We did not plant this species, which sprouted beside native highbush blueberries in a planting bed in front of our primary office building. It attracts scores of butterflies and bees while attaining a height of six feet. New England asters are a host plant for pearl crescent butterflies.
