The Hindustani & Urdu & Hinglish speakers on Reddit never reported violent hate speech & harassment in those subreddits, either — but, when the Perspective API started to cover Hindi & Hinglish, those subs’ toxicity dropped like a rock & subreddits got closed, b/c of automated enforcement

I'm giggling at this because hearing Indian and Pakistani speakers of their respective languages, suddenly code switch to an English word mid sentence, means they're dead right?

Huh. Yeah. I mean, I occasionally teach Ethnography of South Asia and the existence of Hinglish (Hindi-English) and Trekker's English (Himalayan English) have been long-standing. We all even use them in class from time to time.
It's annoying that this is framed as a 'discovery'. And a recent one. This is just true, and has been true for a very long time.
Errors by international students in their academic writing might reflect not a poor grasp of English but rather a legitimate use of new versions of the language, according to researchers

Huh. Yeah. I mean, I occasionally teach Ethnography of South Asia and the existence of Hinglish (Hindi-English) and Trekker's English (Himalayan English) have been long-standing. We all even use them in class from time to time.
Apparently it was (a 2011 "Hinglish" film per Wikipedia) but the phrase is better known as a euphemism / slang term for food-borne infections and stomach upset.
