Mexico's independence day is September 16, for the 1810 Grito de Dolores that opened the war against Spain. Cinco de Mayo marks one battle: Mexican forces beating the French at Puebla on May 5, 1862 - four decades after independence was won in 1821.

The views from Clare Bridge captivate many of us who walk across or punt below. It's easy to overlook the decorative panels - but there are stories in those stones. Please take a look:

@histodons We think this is Glaucus: a repentant fisherman who purified himself by immersion in 100 rivers to become a god of the sea.

100 rivers could be a fun goal...
@trishgreenhalgh.bsky.social have you been counting? 🧵

@ClaireFromClare @histodons Fascinating account; thanks very much. I liked your orientation remark, "below the ball with a missing segment," which presumes that everyone knows about that ball. But while I am familiar with the story, I've never seen actual attested details. Is there anything I […]

Congress adopted the Declaration on July 4, 1776, but the signed parchment did not exist yet. Per the National Archives, the engrossed copy was signed on August 2 - and not every signer was even present that day. In the end, 56 signed. Did you learn it was signed on July 4?
