The hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin) is a weird & wonderful bird, native to the Orinoco & Amazon basins in South America, where it lives in trees overhanging rivers & marshes.

It has a striking look reminiscent of fossil birds like Archaeopteryx, but is more closely related to cranes & plovers.

I drew this Hoatzin in colored pencil while I was playing a round of Wingspan with some friends (I lost horribly)

I’m on the lookout for unique birds and I think this hoatzin totally qualifies! 🐦🌾

Spent the day exploring Lake Sandoval in the Peruvian rain forest. I was thrilled when we spotted four Hoatzin along the water's edge. Called the strangest bird in the Amazon, it has no close avian relatives! I think it's fabulous. #Hoatzin #Peru #Sandoval

I think about the hoatzin; its chicks have claws on their wings.

#RepostYourArt day 11: pencil

Rare traditional art posting from me; this was a hoatzin I drew last year. Fun fact! Apparently they are quite odorous due to their unique fermentative digestive system, similar to that of a cow

- Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin) by Rhys Marsh: ow.ly/10ku42 The Hoatzin is widespread in the lowlands of northern and central South America, and is fairly common throughout much of this region. Hoatzins live in trees and shrubs along the margins of lakes and slow-moving rivers

AWESOME Hoatzin feeding on leaves at Manu Biological Station! 🌿
These birds are honestly real life dinosaurs! 🦖

Known as the "flying cow," the Hoatzin is a folivore that digests its food in a process similar to the internal fermentation used by ruminant mammals.

Thanks to UVO Venezuela, we've expanded the distinctive species' account with parasitic discoveries, territory behaviors, and more!

Hoatzin is the only other one I can think of, and that’s a bigger stretch than the ocellated turkey.
