Some other thoughts about curling umpires judging hogline violations:
Umpires are volunteer officials who are not really trained to spot hogline touched. It’s boring to sit there and watch releases. And the infraction happens too fast when/if it happens

Breaking the plane does count as the hogline. The electronic sensors are only in the handle. Fingers touching the granite likely happens many times, often not called out, but technically against the rules.

You know what annoys me about the curling hubbub? If you think there's been a hogline violation, just be direct and say "I think that was a hogline violation." Then the rock is removed. I hate this futzing around when there's a very reasonable way to deal with infractions.

The laser at hogline gives instantaneous velocity while backline + hogline divided by 27 feet give average.

We put up a guard, ends up just past the hogline by maybe an inch
It gets run back, perfect nose hit

And all of a sudden we have the dumbest, highest center guard I've ever seen, that's over a foot before the hog
