Hogsalt’s creator claims he’s owed $710,000 after his August departure from RH

FULTON MARKET — One of Chicago’s most iconic burger restaurants is closed for the next couple of weeks. Au Cheval, from Hogsalt Hospitality, announced on its website that it is temporarily closed for a refresh. “We look forward to welcoming you back late May,” the restaurant posted on its website this week. Brendan Sodikoff, Hogsalt CEO, told Block Club in an email Tuesday that the restaurant is getting some cosmetic changes including “painting, fixing tile and upholstery as needed.” The flagship location, at 800 W. Randolph St, features a cheeseburger that ranks among the best burgers in the nation, and is known for long wait times. <div id="contentrecs"><p>NORTH SIDE — Chef John Asbaty and restaurateur Alain Uy, former collaborators at RH Hospitality and Hogsalt, are teaming up to open Brick &amp; Mortar, a modern Midwestern restaurant in Lincoln Park.</p><p>The duo met in 2003 while working at the acclaimed Trio in Evanston and have since built impressive resumes at some of Chicago’s top dining destinations.</p><p>Brick &amp; Mortar will take over the former Burger Bar Chicago at 1578 N. Clybourn Ave. in Lincoln Park. The restaurant will take a refined approach to classic Midwestern ingredients with the aim of transforming comfort food with locally sourced ingredients and a wood-burning oven. The beverage program will feature spirits, craft beers and wines from the Midwest.</p><p>Asbaty and Uy met chefs Grant Achatz and Curtis Duffy while working at Trio. Roscoe St.</p><p>The new Lakeview spot will replace <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://blockclubchicago.org/2024/07/08/jennivees-bakery-expands-with-lakeview-cafe/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Jenivee’s Bakery</a>, which recently moved to a larger space on Halsted Street.</p><p>An opening date has yet to be announced, but the Levant Coffee team is aiming for a March 2025 opening.</p><p><strong>Kazka Cafe and Bakery<br/></strong>3056 N. Lincoln Ave.</p><p><a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://www.instagram.com/kazkachicago/" rel="noreferrer noopener external" target="_blank">Kazka Bakery</a> was started by founder Mariia Semeniv in January 2024 as an online-only business specializing in French macarons. Later this year, Semeniv is planning to open a café in Lakeview at 3056 N. Lincoln Ave.</p><p>Following the closures of its locations in Wicker Park and West Loop, the Mexican restaurant Takito Street has closed its Lincoln Park outpost, ending the local chain’s run in Chicago after more than a decade in the city.</p><p>Takito Street opened on Lincoln Avenue in 2019 in the former Lincoln Park home of Fiesta Mexicana.</p><p>The chain’s other two locations, Takito Kitchen in Wicker Park and Bar Takito in West Loop closed in fall 2024. Takito Kitchen first opened in 2013, followed by Bar Takito in 2014.</p><p>“It’s been an amazing and memorable 11-plus year run,” the restaurant said in a statement on social media. “We’ve served over 1.5 million hand-crafted margaritas and nearly 2 million handmade tortillas.”</p><p>Ahead of the store’s closure, <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://chicago.eater.com/2025/2/5/24359623/takito-street-lincoln-park-taco-mexican-closing-depaul" rel="noreferrer noopener external" target="_blank">owner Mario Ponce told Eater</a> that rising costs to keep the business open, along with a slow year for business in 2024, forced him to shut the restaurant down.</p><p><strong>Earls Kitchen + Bar<br/></strong>1538 North Clybourn Avenue</p><p>Earls Kitchen + Bar, which opened in <a data-wpel-link="external" href="https://hospitalitydesign.com/news/f-b/earls-kitchen-bar-debuts-in-chicago/" rel="noreferrer noopener external" target="_blank">Lincoln Park in 2016</a>, has permanently closed. Its last day of business was Feb. 9.</p><p>Earls Kitchen is the <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://blockclubchicago.org/2024/09/26/aldi-closing-its-lincoln-park-store/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">latest closure in a string of them in Lincoln Park’s Clybourn Corridor</a> retail center. The shopping center at Clybourn and Sheffield avenues has lost several major tenants over the years, <a data-wpel-link="internal" href="https://blockclubchicago.org/2022/12/16/goose-island-moving-lincoln-park-brewpub-to-salt-shed-complex-along-chicago-river/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">most recently Goose Island Brewery</a>.</p><p>The Canadian-based, fast-casual restaurant chain was founded in 1982 by father-son duo Bus and Stan Fuller.
