🚨 Big plesiosaur news 🚨
Our paper is out. We describe pigment cells and scales in a Jurassic plesiosaur. Small scales are found at the limbs which enforced them. Body and tail are scale-less. Many thanks to lead-author Miguel Marx & the team.

This is the famous 'Ichthyosaur giving birth' specimen, a Stenopterygius mother found in the Lower Jurassic Posidonia Shale of Holzmaden, Germany. It is one of my favourite ichthyosaurs and curated in the Stuttgart Museum of Natural History, Germany.

In transit to #SICB2025 on #FossilFriday, but here are snapshots of three famous European marine Lagerstätten from a New Year's Day visit to USNM: Holzmaden (Early Jurassic), Solnhofen (Late Jurassic), Bolca (Eocene).

The scale-like structures may have stiffened the paddle during swimming or protected it when grazing on the seafloor. The specimen was found in the 1940s in the Lower Jurassic Posidonia Shale near Holzmaden (#Germany) and is curated at the Urwelt-Museum Hauff.

Naturkundemuseum w Grazu jest stosunkowo niewielkie (ot, 3,5 godziny) ale przemyślane i estetyczne i mają ichtiozaury z Holzmaden i wymarłe trąbowce i fajne ślady dinozaura i mioceńskie syreny i brykiet z węgla brunatnego. Sztos!

The skin at the tail and body was apparently scale-less. Pigment-cells (melanophores) are preserved at the tail. The limb-tissue bears small structures that resemble scales in modern reptiles.
