I actually think he's been broke for years - at least since buying Twitter. The analogy I keep using it is he's house poor. The bulk of his wealth is tied up in Tesla stock and he essentially borrows against its valuation - it's like taking out a home equity line of credit (SIMPLIFYING A LOT).

The usual protection is to lock the home in a trust but once it's locked in a trust it's no longer the home owners so they can't say take a home equity line of credit on it (I'm not am estate planner so someone who knows more chime in)

Lot of attention to traditional 30y fixed rate mortgage rates (conforming new origination), but the home equity line of credit (closed-end second lien) market will see huge growth i.e. lots of borrowing if their effective interest rate drops to ~8% area (8 handle)

So now we have credit cards that leverage a homes equity for a line of credit. I guess if you max out these cards, the companies can take your home.

An interesting spin on a reverse mortgage if what I suspect is true is true.
