Review by Rob Coons of His Hero Is Gone’s ‘The Dead Of Night In Eight Movements’, featured in Maximum Rocknroll #157 (June 1996): HIS HERO IS GONE - "The Dead Of The Night..." EP All I really need to say on this one is ex-COPOUT, and everyone will run out and buy it. Sorry folks, it ain't that simple. What if I told you I listened to my advance copy so much that I practically wore it out? What if I said this was my favorite release of the year so far? This is some heavy duty shit. Eight songs of killer punk rock, that just surges and spews with cerebral busting anger. Deep howling vocals lyrically deal with the downfall of humanity before our very eyes. My favorite track "Epidemic" is a slow grinding number that just numbs the senses. After that, things take off into complete pandemonium more reminiscent of COPOUT. Great production rounds this little gem off, making it a top notch release. If every record was this good I would never leave my house! Look for a possible LP at the end of the year! This LP is intense as fuck with dual female/ male vocals screaming over heavy thrash metal influenced punk rock. These songs are done with the right hooks that really grab you with their intensity. Excellent lyrics that are sung in Polish [with English translations provided] address homophobia, environmental destruction. human and animal rights as mell as personal issues such defending one's individuality and confronting conservative thinking. The production is nice and thick with plenty of clarity and heaviness, making their two split eps sound weak in comparison. This is one of the best records I've heard in quite some time. Hiatus have made great strides in producing some of the most intense and uncompromising hardcore/crust music over the past six years- but on this new 12. they push to the limits of their vast musical abilities. This records has all of the power of the last LP. but with a far superior sound quality and intricate song structures. They delve into new territory as far as experimenting with new tempos and rhythms while still keeping their fast thrash sound.
