This week on the blog: training hoplites!

It strikes a lot of folks as unbelievable, but the evidence really does suggest that, apart from physical fitness (and even then) hoplites don't seem to have trained much at all!

This week (really last week, I forgot to do this over the weekend) on the blog: More Hoplites!

This is the fun part where we talk about the implications of the hoplite debates on Greek society - the nature of the polis and even how many Greeks there were!

Eternally grateful I get to do this and for our students in the Greek warfare lecture this morning. Didn’t even have to weaponize long, awkward pauses to get volunteer hoplites!

Instead, the 'lessons' of Sphacteria/Pylos, which was probably not a new one in Greek warfare, were that:
1) Hoplites benefited from screening forces of light infantry to avoid being harassed and
2) Light infantry could do solid work against hoplites if kept safe by their own heavies. 12/

This week on the blog: Hoplites! We're taking a crack at explaining the long-running debate over the nature and significance of the ancient Greek heavy infantryman, the hoplite, and the phalanx in which he (mostly) fought.

Heavy infantry are really useful! Hoplites might not be good compared to other heavy infantry, but even poor heavy infantry seem to perform well when they close with lighter infantry (see Marathon for a particularly clear example).
And if the alternative is 'nothing' then hoplites are still good
