This exercise strikes me as one of ”depends who/where you ask“ in regards to the output. So these are law students. Running this poll on an Arts and Humanties faculty, for instance, would likely produce VERY different results. 🙃

OTOH: since OpenAI prompting mathematicians to very publicly ask “what is the point?” that silly cliche that “math dudes hate humanties” (&, the connected, more appalling & also dangerous: “studying humanities is pointless & shouldn’t be funded”) is becoming more comically unsustainable by the day?
‘Immature playground boasting’: Mathematicians uneasy at OpenAI’s latest scalp www.theguardian.com/science/2026... maybe, until math is proven, verified & cognizable by humans, it should be considered “artificial math,” & viewed as a work in progress until human verification is complete?

It had active political enemies in the natural sciences. Sokal used poststructuralism to attack humanties (and too many accepted his work w/o considering how easy it is to publish with fake data in science, too).

The pushback cleaved STEM from humanities and limited academic solidarity.

Personally I think a big step in research around ai that needs to happen is more omboarding of digital humanties individuals, sociologists and anthropologists not to study its policy but instead to observe its patterns of behavior as they contrast with other living social organism

Clear, cogent, compelling & inspirational no wonder so many of us wanted Andy as leader & why he was unopposed. This Cambridge grad in humanties is able to relate to our history, our politics & crucially our high rate of inequality amplified by London's dominance. We wish him well!

He'll be snapped up by some Thiel-funded 'Center for Freedom and the Humanties' at a private American university and keep doing stupid provocateur shit for the next 20 years

Hmm 🛋💫 well Bopkin Cappy does have his naughty side, he's a fictional construct though.

I have this chat with my students all the time, just because it is learned in Humanties does nit mean it stays there! Just been able to think critically and articulate your thoughts has to be a skill used everywhere.

3/ attainers are, as you know, disadvantaged pupils. If they are forced (sorry encouraged) into less academic paths then we have a system where the haves follow a broad and balanced curriculum of their chosing and the have-nots do not. This has the opposite impact. As a humanties specialist, I hate

"BuT the HumanTies DoN't MakE AnY MoNey!11!"
Huge congrats to Dr. Wilson on producing a significant scholarly work with popular cross-over appeal while thrusting a red-hot poker into the one-eyed idiocy of anti-educational boors.
(P.S. My books are still available for optioning as movies or series.)
“A Penn professor thought she’d sell 1000 copies of her ‘Odyssey’ translation. She sold a million this year alone, thanks to Christopher Nolan.”

“West Philly's Emily Wilson, who penned a highly acclaimed translation of the epic poem in 2017, is having a big summer.”

This year's Digital Humanties interns have helped to make our Special Collections much more accessible - a big thank you! 🙏
This Year's DH interns worked on an incredible variety of projects and materials. This included glass negatives, VHS tapes, theatre playbills, the Valor Ecclesiasticus, audiobook production, GIS aerial mapping, postcards, items from @bdcmuseum.bsky.social, and posters from the DAME project.

Conservatives: Humanties suck and are leftist propaganda and recruitinggrounds.

Also Conservatives: How dare anyone interpret the classics through any lens other than capitalism and/or toxic masculinity.

I learned from him to always read something that I enjoyed.

Computer science.

Not humanties.

Til this day I have not finished reading Wuthering Heights.

Teachers are something magical.

i am the lisan al gaib of STEM vs humanties discourse as i have advanced degrees in both (also perhaps relatedly my career is in the toilet)
July 6, 2026 at 10:23 AM
That is fair. I just have a habitual response because though I also see this too often used not to truely emphasize the benefit of the humanties themselves but basically just keep up both tradiationalism and two culture views themselves
July 4, 2026 at 7:45 PM
So that isnt really representative of the issue. In fact often it runs the exact opposite direction. Dissatisfaction with the humanties(and stem) can come from understanding both the humanties and science despite enjoying both
July 4, 2026 at 7:41 PM
Most stem degrees still have a liberal arts requirement and most of the tech people that people dislike ironically come from humanties backgrounds.
