I might have to replay this title just to refresh my thoughts on its narrative. Now that I have New Game + Level 99 equipment that deal 5000 damage on average, I won't have to worry about actually engaging with the mechanics.
I may do it. We shall see.

I also forgot the implication they ate the mouse for dinner afterwards. That will not turn out to be the case but, still, it's one Hell of an initial impression!
Another detail I remembered is that Metallia is about to die, which reframes her evil deeds as inherently tragic.

The way it utterly disrupts an otherwise dramatic confrontation between estranged mother and daughter with painful baggage yet to be unpacked, and the manner by which the music frames this situation as *Funny Ha Ha* is the cherry on top of the 'What were they thinking!?' cake.

So, I went back to the first game for the first time since 2020 and I was reminded, instantly, damningly, of how much more memorable of an experience it is compared to its duller successor.
Here's the rodent rape scene, complete with fitting clown music. This happens in Chapter 1.

I am not even sure what was going on by the end of it, utterly checked out as I am, but I'm pretty sure the game skipped several steps to get there. I think a planet-wide time loop was involved but I don't really care. Before I knew it, it was already over.
And that's that.

It had all the flaws of its predecessor but none of the bold charisma to keep itself from becoming tedious. I couldn't get invested in the central relationship between witch/host and older sister because so little screen time was given to the former and WAY too much to the latter.

Its characters and story are weirdly lacking. There are snippets of potential sprinkled throughout it but not enough time is given to expand on dynamics and motivations beyond the most elementary of premises.
It's a much, much smaller title and it suffers for it.

#HundredKnight 2 is scandalously underwhelming, under-baked and heavily resized in its ambition. The way it chose to *fix* the issues of its exploration mechanics was by completely de-emphasize it. Its ugly yet sprawling environments are replaced by boring corridors which are just as ugly.

The one thing #HundredKnight was not is dull. Even at its worst and most infuriating, the game kept me invested through a combination of morbid curiosity and a surprisingly solid emotional throughline. Its ambition was not deterred by its means. I only ever felt Strong Emotions from it.

It had awful, cluttered, overly saturated levels, smeared primarily in radioactive green colours, which lend themselves poorly to exploration - area mapping being a central feature. Unwarranted spikes in difficulty, headache inducing gameplay features and a tonally deaf narrative.

The original #HundredKnight had its problems. In fact, almost everything about it was an immeasurably large mountain of issues crumbling atop my head like a deadly rockslide. It was not, by any sensible metric, good.

I do not think I have ever been more disappointed by a sequel as I have in this one instance. I would be shocked and appalled if my prevailing emotion wasn't sheer emptiness. What happened here!?

Do not worry, though! The Church has a plan to combat this plague and it TOTALLY does not involve murdering a bunch of children...
Anyway, a little girl gets a magical headmate and her older sister tries to hide them both from her child-murdering pals. High jinks ensue.

In this world, witches are all-powerful, walking cataclysms akin to natural disasters. They are also, apparently, a parasitic infection that manifests in the bodies of girls and young women. A new witch *awakens* by taking over the host's body, which would normally kill them.

Well, it's been close to six years since then. I finally decided to get the sequel (which is actually a prequel) to see if it could even remotely match the bizarre energy of its predecessor. I can tell you that the new (loli) witch is a lot LESS unlikeable right off the bat.
Lame.

Especially with all the typical Nippon Ichi-branded, tonally uneven moments that fill the diegesis: the aforementioned rat gangbang plays out as comedy, aggravatingly.
I would have loved to re-share my original thoughts on #HundredKnight but, unfortunately, Elon's Twitter seems to have purged them.
