My short story 'Age and Hunger' begins with a Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai where one of the story-tellers is secretly a nurahiyon.

Who would win between a highly trained ascetic monk vs one furry fox?

This folktale from 'Shokoku hyakumonogatari' tackles this question hard: matthewmeyer.net/blog/2022/10/06/a-yokai-a-day-the-kitsune-who-took-revenge-on-a-yamabushi

Day 2 of A-Yokai-A-Day 2026.

Tonight we'll look at a ghost story—not a scary one but a bittersweet one. 👻

It's nice to know that not all Japanese ghosts are the kind that crawl out of TV sets and twist your face around.

Everybody loves tengu! They're one of the most famous yokai in Japanese folklore, and so naturally there are more than a few tengu stories appearing in Shokoku hyakumonogatari!

One of my favorite books of Japanese folktales is "Shokoku hyakumonogatari." Here's my translation of the first tale in that book: "How Itagaki Saburō Was Killed by a Henge in Suruga Province"

And he was right. The audience I built with the blog (hyakumonogatari.com) left me better positioned to be marketable and with a built-in fanbase. As well as the ability to push out my book directly to subscribers.

None of that would have happened without the blog.
