Formation and redox evolution of Earth’s early atmosphere and hydrosphere

"A 25-person startup" should not be allowed to "disrupt" fundamental inputs to the Earth's ecosystem, hydrosphere, and atmosphere.

Like, what are we even thinking here?

Melting the ice on Mars wouldn't produce an atmosphere or hydrosphere, it would just boil off in the low pressure and solar wind, like it ALREADY did.
Today, Mars is a planet entirely populated by robots.

It's cold and dry with little atmosphere. But when the solar system was young, 4 billion years ago, it had atmosphere, oceans, and most of the building blocks for early life.

So what went wrong? It's a mystery!

New paper: The role of fire on Earth
doi.org/10.1093/bios... BioScience @aibsbiology.bsky.social
Fire affects all major components of the Earth system: atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, anthroposphere, & biosphere. Fire is an intrinsic factor on our planet.

Until now 90% of the warming of our planet went into the hydrosphere, not into the atmosphere. Now the oceans begin to emit heat into the air. It only just begun.

Bummer, the weather channel just said that the Air quality today is at toxic levels. The Air apparently has been convincing Cumulus clouds they’re actually stratocumuli and stealing money from their roommate, the Hydrosphere

Research Question - assuming space based optical/radio telescopes with reasonably huge synthetic apparture dimensions - what is a reasonable maximum range at which an Earth sized exo-planet could be imaged enough to take accurate measurements of atmosphere, hydrosphere, rough topography?

You can in principle make Mars habitable in the short term—thousands to tens of thousands of years—at vast expense and effort (over centuries to thousands of years) but the hydrosphere won't be long-term stable. Wasted effort, in terms of evolutionary time frames.

For this #EarthDay, one of the more elemental & geologically fascinating places I've seen recently, Great Falls National Park, with the Potomac River passing over & eroding tectonically tormented Late Proterozoic sedimentary rocks, involving geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, & biosphere. 🪨⚒️🌍

The defining signature of the past 6,000 years of human civilization is the domestication of the hydrosphere—capturing, damming, canalizing, reorienting, propertizing, privatizing, consuming, profiting from, depleting, and poisoning it.

Not remotely clear oxygen levels at any point in the Paleozoic were above modern levels.

Direct samples preserved in halite do not show this at all outside of the mid-Silurian.

Everybody should note:

"requiring life"
"evolution of minerals"

Coevolution of the solid Earth, the hydrosphere, the atmosphere, and the biosphere is a real thing.
August 4, 2026 at 3:38 AM
Also, plants and other photosynthetic organisms are not able to keep up with the excess supply of CO2. That’s why it keeps accumulating in the atmosphere and hydrosphere. Plants and “greening” will not save us.

Reminder that terraforming *is* fantasy and "coevolution of the solid Earth, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere" isn't a metaphor, the mutual interactions were and are very real.

We can’t control the overall hydrosphere but we can control the way we build roads and other urban surfaces that function as flood amplifiers.
