Another target achieved on my himalayan holiday to Ladakh India. Hoped to see an ibisbill but to photograph one was a big bonus.

Lucky to find this Ibisbill close to the Ming Tombs in Beijing last week. Formerly a common breeder in suitable habitat, it is now probably functionally extinct due to a loss of habitat (the 'taming' of the capital's fast-flowing stony rivers). This is the 1st record for a few years. #birds #beijing

www.youtube.com/watch?v=nast... I didn't realize how wild the taxon containing the hoatzin was such a wild MESS. Killdeer? Rails? Lots of birds named after OTHER birds (Ibisbill: not an ibis)? PENGUINS??
Hoatzins Are NOT Primitive Birds!

Still staying with shorebirds (my favourite bird group), here is a very special one, the Ibisbill. It's a high altitude species from the Himalayas. I was lucky having seen it in Ladakh. I share 2 watercolours and 1 oil painting.

Bhutan is full of exciting, exotic, near mythical birds: Himalayan Monal, Beautiful Nuthatch, Fire-tailed Myzornis, Ibisbill, Ward's Trogon...

but the bird I most wanted to see was this one, White-crested Laughingthrush, a feature of childhood nature books and zoo visits

as the sun sets for the last time in 2025, it turns out a Wallcreeper just before lunch was my 1010th bird of the year, including 152 lifers

there have been some crackers, from Emperor Penguin to Ibisbill and 2spp of Helmetcrest, with a party of Red-headed Bullfinch as bird number 1000

Ibisbill, Kosi River, India, February 2025. One of two present, they move back to higher elevations in early March. Stunning birds in a stunning location on our recent trip with Asian Adventures. Big thanks to @bubomike.bsky.social for staying on the bird until we got there! #birds #waders

Fishing in Kazachstan was a great adventure - and some observations came as a surprise. As this odonate-fishing ibisbill. Such a super cool bird.

back to the beginning...

I started my #Bhutan trip with a roadside Ibisbill just outside Paro, and 10 days later I'm back, just a stone's throw away from a male Wallcreeper: two monotypic families within sight of each other.

Winter in Bhutan... beats Storm Goretti any day!
