Female Clistopyga incitator found ovipositing on a wall in Liberton Cemetery, #Edinburgh this afternoon. This species oviposits in egg sacs of spiders.

Listen, you don’t understand how weird their lore gets. Throwing their eggs over houses, weasel/mongoose/ichneumons being their enemies (that can eat crocodiles from the inside out, but that’s neither here nor there) and fatal halitosis.

I’ve just identified this smart ichneumon that turned up in my light trap in mid-June: Baranisobas ridibundus, a species with only one other record in the Birmingham area (though like many ichneumons, probably under-recorded). @ecorecord.bsky.social @gavinbroad.bsky.social @jasboparai.bsky.social

@graemelyons.bsky.social are any of these Chalcids any good for you? Not got any decent Braconids, but have a few Ichneumons if that's any use.

Four lovely ichneumons (all in subfamily Ichneumoninae) recently encountered in our Worcester garden 💚🍃

35 species, but nothing new, in the moth trap. However, 3 lifers on the patio door! Ichneumons Ophion minutus and Netelia millieratae plus the soldier beetle Cantharis decipiens. #TeamMoth

I normally stay away from #Ichneumons, but Itoplectis maculator is one of the more distinctive species.

Many thanks to @neilmoths.bsky.social for compiling an excellent ID guide to nocturnal ichneumon #wasps and making it available via the Buckinghamshire Invertebrate Group website sites.google.com/site/bucksin... #MothTrapIntruders

Ichneumons are way beyond my skill set I'm afraid.

Insect of the day, is what I believe is Apechthis compunctor, a female due to the shape of the ovipositor.
As with all ichneumons there is always a degree of uncertainity!

ichneumons are usually hell to get photos of, was glad to either catch her on the job (looking for hosts) or disoriented in the dark. zebra and orange is one of my favorite ichneumon outfits, many species have this color scheme

OK, BSky entomologists.
Might this beastie be Pimpla rufipes? Ichneumons are not my thing.

An interesting find at Hill Hook LNR yesterday, the cranefly Ptychoptera albimana (a male) at Hill Hook LNR. Never previously encountered the genus which is supposed to mimic ichneumons in flight! @ecorecord.bsky.social @dipteristsforum.bsky.social

My favourite wasp fact is that they destroyed an entire school of thought. Natural theologians reasoned the study of nature could give them a greater understanding of god. Then they realised how many species of ichneumons there are and quietly dropped the whole idea.

I got into moths 6 years ago and have managed to cram my head with a fair amount of stuff since then! But you’re right about lack of time, which definitely hampers my study of tricky insect groups like Ichneumons.

Possibly Pimpla rufipes by the Carp lake this morning. Assuming that I am right, always as unmissable insect with the shiny black body contrasting with the orange legs, but not as big as some of the other ichneumons about

Those who run a light trap for moths will know it can attract other visitors too. Rewarding to get to know are the nocturnal ichneumons - surprisingly diverse despite looking superficially alike. Four species from our garden in 2023 pictured. 🧡🍃

In the last week or so Western Giant Ichneumonid Wasps (Megarhyssa notrtoni) have oviposited on a dying spruce tree in our yard. Today a female horntail (Xeris indecisus) is ovipositing on the same tree, with a couple male horntails hanging around. The ichneumons parasitize the horntail larvae.
