It was fun to get out some of our thoughts on possible connections between #IETF / #IETF120 and a smaller volunteer event like @ournetworks.ca --

Great interview with @ournetworks.ca organizers Dawn & Garry
The theme for this year is "Does not (cloud) compute", drawing on practices of local-first , solar-powered servers, folk software , and permacomputing.

MLS is all of: the right choice, early, and needed today.
Also: this feels like a common need that one might build libraries around?
@bnewbold.net would this be a good topic to gather around for #IETF120 ?

the biggest bummer with MLS (the protocol) is that there isn't an existing open source, beloved, security-audited app with 50+ million users and both mobile and browser support that we can just copy.
there are a bunch of projects that are a couple of those things (eg linearized matrix experiment)

The Internet Engineering Task Force @ietf.bsky.social is pretty unknown to many. It's one of the major Standards Development Organizations involved in the architecture and governance of the Internet.
In late July, #IETF120 is meeting in Vancouver.

We've taken this as an excuse to both participate in #IETF120 — the starting Hackathon is free to attend — as well as to explore what a local approach to the Internet means. Software, hardware, art, media, and tech of our own.
