Tearing my hair out at academic materials on IHRL which claim to be discussing sexual orientation and gender identity but then exclusively refer to examples of sexual orientation. Don't purport to include gender identity if you're not going to do it properly!

The EHRC is not a human rights defender organisation, it's a policy led QUANGO run by the British government to rights-wash its existing policy goals and dispose of its responsibilities under IHRL.

This briefing examines how standalone generative AI systems, based on unlawful web scraping, are in conflict with international human rights law (IHRL) and standards through their design, development and deployment. While these technologies promise sophisticated automation and efficiency, they rely on data collection and model training practices that abuse privacy rights, enable discrimination, and threaten […]

A counterproductive and unlawful U.S. policy:

Several States have now curtailed counter-narcotics intelligence support and/or called out U.S. boat strikes as illegal:

Canada
Colombia
EU
France
Mexico
Netherlands?
UK

We discuss their legal obligations that forbid support for boat strikes.
Obligation of States to Stop Intelligence Support for U.S. Strikes
The only way States can avoid complicity in “arbitrary killings” under IHRL is to refrain from sharing intelligence that enables them.

go.bsky.app/KE77aRL new starter pack for ECRs in international law, EU law, IHRL and legal theory! 🫡 I guess it might be useful for many

(Disclaimer: I added people according to *my* sense of who an early career researcher is - of course, feel free to join if you consider yourself an ECR!)

Keir Starmer was once a distinguished human rights lawyer who wrote texts on the European Convention on Human Rights. That Starmer would be appalled by this Prime Minister trying to replace the independence of the courts with government approved 'reinterpretation' of IHRL

Starmer wants rethink on international law to tackle migration
The PM gives the clearest sign yet the government wants to reform how human rights laws are applied in immigration cases.

We're dealing with an aspirational theocratic ethno state which feels selfrighteous about completely thrashing IHRL and the Geneva convention and perversely smug about murdering more than 70.000 Palestinian civilians.
We're not dealing with normal people here.

Here, however, his inexplicable acceptance of that absurd idea caused him not only to engage in that first patently unlawful strike--which violates murder statutes, IHRL, and longstanding DOD norms--but also to leave him helplessly at sea (sorry) in deciding whether to take the second strike. [4]

(in reality, having a functioning independent national human rights institute that positively engages with civil society human rights organisations is just part of a requirement by the United Nations as part of obligations the UK agreed to around IHRL)

Britain didn't used to have many political goals around human rights law, but it's become something the UK is increasingly actively antipathetic about following 2010 with austerity, covid, increasingly violent migration discourse, Gaza, all of which IHRL mandates the uk to bite bullets for.

1. Analogizing Gaza to *Imperial Japan* is insane.
2. Israel isn’t allowed to fight total war against a non-state with no army that it effectively controls.
3. Modern IHRL was largely developed post-WW2 in reaction to Dresden, Tokyo, A-bombs, etc. WW2 is nobody’s gold standard wrt civilian death.
July 23, 2025 at 2:30 AM
On a national interest level, it's increasingly more profitable for the UK as a nation state to say "fuck disabled people, intern migrants in camps abroad, maximise arms trade sales to Saudi and Israel".

Trans people are a useful argument for throwing out IHRL altogether from the UK perspective.

The 22 boat strikes have triggered an international obligation to investigate potential illegalities.

Michael Schmitt and Marko Milanovic discuss

- legal sources for the obligation to investigate
- criteria for carrying out independent investigation

The International Law Obligation to Investigate the Boat Strikes
The lethal strikes are unlawful under IHRL and, even on the administration’s own terms, trigger LOAC and DoD duties to investigate.

I’m sorry, but “unlawful web scraping” is not itself a human rights violation unless you have a view of either property rights or privacy rights that is itself incompatible with the human right to free expression and in deep tension with substantive equality.

This statement needs at least to be qualified. Starmer's government continues to approve arms sales for numerous states that are flagrant, egregious violaters of IHRL, and international law more generally. So his belief in these things clearly has significant limits, in practice.
If Starmer believes in anything, it’s international human rights law. He can reel the court’s most famous cases and detail from memory - and often does. While he is PM, the UK’s membership is settled. But ministers acknowledge something has to change or it will become a binary leave or remain fight
