I was also initially worried the more obscure artists wouldn’t resonate as much, but I’ve since found out people have used the series to discover artists they previously didn’t know, which is really cool!
Here’s “Yves Klein consults his colour wheel” and of course, the entire wheel is in Yves Klein Blue, which the big art nerds will know as IKB, aka - International Klein Blue. I remember first coming across this blue when I was working in an Architecture office and one of the directors asked me to draw up a version of a bridge in what I heard as Eve Kline Blue, and honestly - I don’t know how young architects survived without being able to google something like that. I mean… the boss could have also just said make it a really deep, dark, blue - but of coure that wouldn’t be very architecturey. Next we have “Marina Abramovic waits for a menu” and she’s sitting at a table just waiting for a menu. This is definitely the best way to wait for a menu, just stare into that middle distance and don’t make any eye contact with waiters at all, and they’ll have a menu in your hand in no time, if only to get the weird guy staring into the middle distance fed and out the door before you start creeping out the other patrons. Also, of all the artists I drew for this series, I think I somehow got Marina’s look the closest. (I mean… as close as you can when you don’t draw necks or half the facial features) AAH Belgium’s favourite, Magritte! Here we have ‘Rene Magritte complains to the greengrocer’ and here the Greengrocer is wearing a hat while Magritte holds up an apple to his face while saying “Ceci n’est Pas une pomme” - This is a fun one because I’ve managed to reference two artworks in the one joke, AND I’ve also drawn what is quite frankly an EXCELLENT fruit stand. Someone also mentioned that I’d missed the point of The Treachery of Images because Magritte is holding an actual apple, but then someone else pointed out that the apple here is STILL a drawing, so it really depends on framing here, which is actually kind of exactly the point of The Treachery of Images - or at least it’s bringing about the same conversations as the original, which is good enough for me! Last up, ‘Jeff Koons Entertains a Children’s Party’ - Where Jeff Koons is creating one of his famous balloon dogs for some largely disinterested children. I do wonder if Jeff can actually make a balloon dog… Surely he must right? But then again when you’re that wildly successful why would you? Just get someone else to make it. Didn’t someone accidentally knock one of those balloon dogs off a pedestal at a gallery recently? I seem to recall that happening. And then immediately you can’t help but assume it’s a marketing thing. Who knows. Anyway, I did a good job on the balloons here. Really happy with that.

…from previous visits, which was really fun. i loved the idea of him going through their art, seeing pieces i had seen before, and going, “yeah, that one, that needs to be in here.”
a picture of text on wall. text reads in part: blue water: “BLUE WATER The first room begins with the blue of Kim Whanki. Among the artists I belatedly discovered, Kim was the very first name I fell for. In 1960, Yves Klein astonished the world with his International Klein Blue IKB) in France. Ten years later, Kim Whanki's blue spread silently through New York, in tens of thousands of dots. Very slowly. After working between Korea, Paris, and New York, Kim passed away in New York in 1974. After his death, thanks to the efforts of his wife, Kim HyangAn, this painting was donated to SMOMA in 1979. Now, forty-seven years later, I have come from Seoul to stand before this painting in San Francisco. I wonder if she ever imagined a day like this. In English, "blue" can mean sadness, but it is also the color of the sky, and of denim. And water flows, reflecting all of those blues. Freezing, then melting, becoming waves, becoming raindrops. In this room, the water of Roni Horn, Vija Celmins, and Tony Feher flows together as well. I hope the time spent here begins blue and clear.” an image of a small painting with three equally sized vertical stripes on a dark blue background. the two outer stripes are nearly black while the middle stripe is a very dark red. there is a plaque nearby which reads “Yun Hyong-keun 윤형근 Born 1928, Cheongwon-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea: died 2007, Seout 1928년 한국 충청북도 청원군 출생, 2007년 서울 사망 Untitled 무제 1973 Oil on linen 리넨에 유채 Collection of RM Yun Hyong-keun was Kim Whankis student and son-in-law. His blue began as his teacher's blue. He called blue the color of sky, umber the color of earth-and 1973 is right when he started mixing the two. Patches of blue still linger here, and umber keeps seeping in, over inside it. thinned with turpentine, the paint bleeds deep into the linen, so you can't draw a line where sky ends and earth begins. Where the blue he received is leaving. Yun's own color is arriving. To me, these in-between years burn hotter than any of his masterpieces.” an image of a sculpture hanging from the ceiling. it is made of several large glass spheres in varying shades of turquoise and clear glass
