These people are not concerned about losing THEIR culture , they just don’t want to have to recognise anyone else’s.

That was the way. The Christian church appropriated Samhain (All Saints), Imbolc (St. Brigid's day), Bealtaine (St. Philips and St. James), Lughnasa (Garland Sunday). Not to mention Holy Wells! It helped them to "bring" the island's people on board.

12. Interesting Samhain facts. 1. Samhain is celebrated from sunset on October 31 to sunset on November 1, almost halfway between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice. 2. Some modern Pagans consider it the "witch's new year," though other traditions simply recognize Samhain as the end of the year. 3. Rituals surrounding Samhain include bonfires, healing, dancing, thanksgiving, and honoring of the dead. 4. It is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals along with Imbolc, Beltane, and Lughnasadh. It is also the third harvest festival of the eight Witches sabbats. 5. It's considered a liminal time, when the veil between life and death grows thin. Food is set aside for ancestors and protective spirits, and rituals honoring the dead take place. 6. Samhain is pronounced "sah-win" or "sow-in." 7. Despite all horror movies depicting witches flying across a full moon we won't be able to observe one on Samhain until 2020. We had this chance in 2001 and before that in 1955. 8. As it was believed that faeries, witches, and demons roamed the earth on Samhain, food and drink were customarily set out to placate them. Later on, people began dressing up as these creatures and claiming the goodies for themselves, sometimes performing antics or tricks in exchange for food and drink. This practice evolved into trick-or-treating. It was first called souling when gifts were given in exchange for prayers, door to door Trick or treating has only been around since the 1940s. 9. Some of Halloween's most common traditions are rooted in Samhain's harvest festival roots, such as the carving of pumpkins and turnips, bobbing for apples, bonfires and dressing up. 10. Some celebrate Samhain with a ritual to guide the dead home by opening a western-facing door or window and placing a candle by the opening. 11. Here's why people have argued this to be true. Samhainwas one of the four early medieval (and likely ancient) Irish feasts of the year, alongside Imbolc, Bealtaine, and Lughnasadh. One of the quarter days, so called because each marked out 1/4th of the year.
