The message from the Left should be: tariffs bad, industrial policy good.
Sure, there are niche cases where tariffs might be useful as part of industrial policy, but it really weakens the message to add qualifiers. Fight unreservedly against the thing destroying the economy.

they're calling it the first recorded case of de-industrial policy

"US immigration enforcement has evolved into a rapidly growing multi-billion-dollar industry in which profitability increasingly dictates policy and enforcement priorities."

The US Immigration Industrial Complex is a Threat to Everyone
If President Dwight D. Eisenhower were alive today, he very well may warn of the ever-growing immigration industrial complex.

one thing i particularly enjoyed in this conversation: everyone now seems to be converging on "we should do industrial policy." but "industrial policy" is not a monolith; it is a tradition full of failed experiments. what does it take to do *effective* industrial policy in the 21st century?

Good news for my goal of writing an industrial policy book set in Star Trek.

I think people reeeeealllly overestimate the role of trade and industrial policy in US dominance of heavy industry in the 1950s and really underestimate the importance of having dropped high explosives on every facility in Japan or Germany capable of manufacturing a ball bearing

beginnings of a recognition of the scale of the catastrophe they've created for their own core policy of reshoring industrial factories. still deputy secy of state mcrandoson probably wont cut it.
US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau expressed regret on Sunday over the recent detention of hundreds of South Korean workers in Georgia and said those who returned home will face no disadvantage when re-entering the US

A tariff that expires in 150 days isn’t a long-run industrial policy. Firms invest on multi-year horizons. If the policy is temporary, the investment response will be, too: mostly none.

(This was recorded when the tariff rate was 10%; it's now 15%.)

I feel like the fact that America used to have an EV national champion whose CEO destroyed the company and committed huge sums of his wealth to support the destruction of US green industrial policy raises a lot of weird and difficult questions about green industrial policy

Biden built an industrial policy. It was working. We were on a comeback.

This Republican budget bill - which destroys the clean energy industry in the U.S. - is a choice to surrender to China.

We need industrial policy to make more RAM.

The industrial policy that helped spawn the world's biggest semiconductor manufacturer traces directly back to the New Deal's Tennessee Valley Authority

You cannot simultaneously do “industrial policy” while gutting state capacity.

Industrial policy works. It doesn't work immediately... but it works.
Wow

SEIA is claiming after record Q3 growth US solar manufacturers can meet all US demand 🤯

feel like these guys just got taken by the MAGA vibes on Vichy Twitter that climate policy is woke and gay rather than regular ass industrial policy in a 21st century context

I can: I see the Biden industrial policy as in line with abundance, because it engaged in industrial policy that actually resulted in an increase in productive capacities.

In housing, land use restrictions are the biggest obstacle, but when they're out of the way we SHOULD subsidize to catch up
March 18, 2025 at 1:50 PM
yeah you can see this even in biden's messaging on his various industrial policies: they're billed as creating jobs, not creating stuff

any realistic industrial policy will never be a jobs policy! it's a stuff policy!

The belief in a non-existent "censorship industrial complex" now shapes American foreign policy.

A brilliant deep dive from the MIT Technology Review

How ideas of a vast censorship network moved from the online fringe to Trump policy
Narratives about a “censorship-industrial complex” spread in right-wing circles for years; then they took hold of Washington. What—and who—is behind them?

Some national leaders practice industrial policy; Trump practices anti-industrial policy
Trump announces he will sharply scale back fuel-efficiency rules for new cars and light trucks, gutting one of the government’s most significant efforts to reduce gasoline consumption and speed the country’s shift to electric vehicles.

Rolling back clean energy policies to “save” European industry will backfire. It may seem attractive in the short term, but it’s poor industrial policy in the long run.

Standing still on climate policy undermines competitiveness. Industry needs stability and long-term direction, not uncertainty.

Trump’s "state capitalism" has nothing whatever to do with public ownership, socialism, helping the working class, or improving national security.

There is no real industrial policy.

It’s all about centralizing ever more control over America in the Oval Office.
