New batch of pokeberry ink just dropped!

While I was straining it, a hair wisped into my face, and I instinctively brushed it back with me (gloved) hand, and accidentally became a member of the Cool Pink Hair Kids Club...

For a tinkerer part of the enjoyment of using fountain and dip pens is mixing custom ink colors. I wanted a darker orange to add to my fall color palette; 88⅓% Diamine Autumn Oak, 8⅓% Monteverde Brown Sugar, 8⅓% HongDian Yellow = Autumn Sugar is pretty close.

Made pickled beetroot today from a few fresh bunches bought at the market. Decided to use the skins, leaves & stems to make my first ever batch of ink. Decided they looked too good to head straight into the compost 🫜🫙🫟

Kiryll knows stories, songs, and art history, and practical potion and inkmaking, with a little bit of machinery tinkering on the side. He learned machines early on in life, & has some mechanical empathy even though he doesn't see machinery as his calling, nor does he think of himself as scholarly.

What have your wol/oc studied in? Are they scholar? Have they graduated? ARE THEY ARCHON?

On my part, Saphir went from ninth to Sharlayan and managed to speedrun a thesis on Electrope to make it known to everyone. And she got her Archon of Electrope tattoo ! She's the goat

RIGHT! We started off talking inkmaking varnish.

Sideways of my desire to do stinky things, I saw a video of making Chinese ink sticks and it starts with boiling antlers to get keratin to use as a binding agent! That would also be fun!!!

Turning my thoughts away from the bad-to-worse political scene, to once again focus on transcribing the various witnesses of an 11th-century inkmaking manual (as I'm confirmed to start editing it come September) – and it's amazing the peace I feel copying instructions for making gold burnishers…

I find them really fascinating (and slightly creepy Cthulhuoidish) as well.
I wondered whether to experiement with them for inkmaking. (former boyfriend claimed you could smoke anything in nature so maybe I'll experiment with turning 'odd' things into ink. But one step at a time!)

Mulberry ink results:

It's beautiful and magical, but very thin.

Not sure how well it would stay in a fountain pen, at the moment. Works beautifully with a dip pen, though!

Might need to put this back on the heat, tomorrow, and either reduce it a little more, or add more gum arabic.

Making mulberry ink!

I look forward to using it - and to seeing to what color it dries.

Working on the inkmaking flashcards that were one of my Kickstarter rewards, and will also be a new product in my shop when ready. I hadn't been able to give them a thought till the book was done, and they're turning out to be quite cool!

Ah, one of the many types of "The Artist's Curse." Whatever we enjoy will inevitably go out of production - I do wish that inkmaking were more clear, and less of a technical hassle, that way we could at least produce our own.

I often have to gauge how well unclogging cleaners will save pens, aye.

#writerscoffeeclub Jan. 27: What’s a technical skill you think should be more widespread?

Quill sharpening and inkmaking. One can simply not find help nowadays who have the slightest skillfulness in shaping a decent goose-quill, or making up a satisfactory inkpot.

I blame the latterday […]

This horse chestnut on Turl Street has been dropping conkers so enthusiastically I don't know how it hasn't knocked anyone out yet – or me while I was gathering the stuff up. Let me show you what I've done with these spiky things. 🧵

Racing against the weather on this one. Nasty thunderstorms are rolling in here and we're supposed to get a soaker of a storm. I decided to make my acorn cap ink outside. It's messy. I did a quick extraction of the tannins and I'm currently boiling them down to make the #foraged #artist #inkmaking

I went looking for their website and it seems their stuff is totally out of stock (not sure if they're actually in operation anymore??) BUT the owner wrote a book which I am totally buying, called "Make Ink: A Forager's Guide to Natural Inkmaking"

Elżbieta Wójcik-Leese writes with/in English, Polish & Danish. She lives in Copenhagen & is ‘a creative ambassador’ for the Møn UNESCO Biosphere. Her site-specific verbal/visual texts use analogue processes: botanical inkmaking, cyanotype, pinhole photography, expressive handwriting, and book art.
