Only one moth species today, but one which is one of my favourites: Black Arches , Lymantria monacha. Just look at that amazing B+W pattern, hiding the pink abdomen. And that face! Can't get much cuter than that!

Unlike most Ground beetle the Common Sun Beetle, Amara aenea, likes to be in the open, often warming up in the sun. This one was like the Alder beetle and quite a few other beetle species attracted to a wooden fence post end of summer, possibly lured in by some pheromones. Some more photos in comments

The Springtail-stalker , Notiophilus sp ,is a type of ground beetle which hunts springtails in the leaf litter and moss. There are 8 species which look all very similar. We also found a larva which we think is a Notiophilus larva. #WildlifeUK , #NatureUK , #InvertebratesUK , #InsectsUK , #BeetlesUK

Found a few of these on the house wall (Bridgwater/Somerset). They seem to be empty so I wondered if they were parasitised? Any idea on what type of caterpillar and/or parasite? #WildlifeUK , #NatureUK , #InvertebratesUK , #InsectsUK , #CaterpillarsUK, #MothsUK , #ParasitesUK

Not what you expect to find on a Christmas eve walk! Painted lady , Vanessa cardui. It was sunny and warm and there were some blown over to the UK a few days before from the mainland, but wouldnt have expected it to be in such a good condition, looked like it had only just hatched.

1 of the 46 aphodiines dung beetle in the UK,most likely Calamosternus granarius. Most spend their entire lives in dung.Several species can be present in the same dung pile but preferences for dung type/age,soil type+level of sun exposure exist so different species avoid competition with each other.

2/6 These perfectly round holes have been cut out by a leafcutter bee. Inside the nest (hollow stem, tunnel in rotten wood) the leaf pieces are manipulated to form a thimble-like structure, which is then filled with a mixture of nectar and pollen before eggs are laid into it.

1/6 Leafcutter bees, Megachilidae, are a solitary type of bee and there are a total of 7 species in this family within the UK. If you have seen leaves with holes cut into them by little jaws, this is down to the female bees who use the pieces to build the cells in their nest.

Live stages of a weevil, possibly Hypera sp. .Their larvae are colourful +active, feeding openly on leaves, more like caterpillars than other weevil grubs. Several species of Hypera are known as the golden cage weevils as they spin a mesh cocoon of golden silk on the leaf surface to pupate within.

Despite popular belief the Common earwig will not crawl into your ear while you sleep - it much prefers a nice log or stone pile.Female Common earwigs are excellent mothers: laying their eggs in damp crevices, they guard the nest+gently clean the eggs until the young hatch.
