The buckwheat seeds are almost ready to harvest 🌱

I will wait until about 75% of the seeds are brown to cut them down.

Buckwheat helps make phosphorus more available in the soil for other plants, so I intercrop with tomatoes and peppers.

Mixed crop systems are really cool. They provide opportunities to improve land use efficiency, but also give great opportunities to learn how plants respond plastically to local conditions, which may vary quite a bit in mixed crops. Interested in our view? See: www.nature.com/articles/s44...

Intercrop of beans & wheat was all a buzz today with both honey bees and bumblebees.

The wheat will get a constant supply of biologically fixed nitrogen from the beans, hopefully making milling quality

New paper from our group! We found that maize plants from push-push fields had a higher relative abundance of metabolites toxic to insect herbivores. This suggests that maize plants growing with companion plants are "stronger" than maize plants growing alone.

Some colleagues and I have long planned of creating a pure Agroecology themed podcast called “The Intercrop.” But we will need to clone ourselves first.

The demand for hemp from such a facility would also benefit farmers in the region, as industrial hemp is a great intercrop and fallow crop, meaning that it can be grown on the same land as existing crops, thus boosting farmland productivity.

My lesser trefoil plant has been a bit excessively watered in the last few days, and now the seeds are sprouting while still on the plant 😯

I'm transferring them to a seed tray; hopefully they'll take, because it's really pretty and I want to intercrop it for the nitrogen fixation.

Given that hemp is also a great intercrop and fallow crop, a large amount could also be grown on farmlands without displacing existing crops, so there's potential for hemp production to offset as much as 25% of U.S. emissions if production were to be expanded to it's maximum potential.

“They enticed us by saying that they would till our land and give us the seeds, and we could also intercrop with greengrams and beans...I had to forgo maize because we were discouraged from intercropping both. The year the castor failed, I had no reserves of maize." #biofuels
As part of a flagship biofuel project, the Italian energy major Eni has handed out castor seeds to over a hundred thousand Kenyan farmers. In interviews with SourceMaterial, many farmers said the project has failed them.
