Next they'll be rewriting textbooks to say Japanese American internment camps were delightful summer resorts.
Over 120,000 Japanese Americans forced into imprisonment in internment camps simply because they were of Japanese heritage.
On this Day of Remembrance, we honor the 120,000 Japanese Americans unjustly imprisoned during WWII because of their heritage. Their resilience remind us to never forget the lessons of history. We will continue to fight for justice, equality, and civil rights for all.

We hadn’t won World War II by May 8th. I know because my family and I were still in an internment camp in Tule Lake, California.

My grandma was a citizen, she had my aunt in an internment camp
citizenship may seem clear & inviolable if you've never had it challenged, but it is easy to move the goalposts on it or tangle it in bureaucracy. Easy for an official to ask for a passport & "lose" it. Not everyone has a passport to begin with & birth certificates vary by state; easy to cast doubt.
And to expand on one of the points in the piece: being a citizen doesn’t protect you from this. See Japanese American internment in WWII, where about 2/3 of those interned were American-born citizens.

If you think it can’t happen here, remember that it already did. In 1942 soldiers came with rifles to our home and ordered us out. They put us in internment camps. Most of us were citizens.
