Ya I messed that one up. That's ipnops. I knew that and yet for some reason I typed bathytyphlops. Good grief. Do we have an edit yet? Ipnops is tripod. A bathypterois. Hopefully i have thoroughly confused you because I am confused as heck.

This is amazing. They start off odd and get progressively odder. Ipnops is a tripod fish with very, very, VERY weird eyes. I guess the long bits are extensions of the pectoral fins with bioluminescent tips. Maybe. 🤷‍♀️ I have no idea. Vertebrates confuse me.

Also that siphonophore is wild.

Trying to learn tripods. So far I understand that the silver w/ long fins & normal pectoral fins (not branched & just point up) are Bathypterois grallator. Then there's B atricolor, B viridensis, Ipnops, Bathytyphlops, & Bathymicrops. Those last 3 are pretty easy. Am I missing any?

ipnops is a pretty fucked up instance of this - as juveniles they live as plankton, and have fully functioning eyes. here's a photo of one from blackwater photographer Steven Kovacs:

and here's what they look like all grown up, chilling on the seafloor, in a photo from NOAA:
