The album was self-produced by the band and they recorded it deep in Illinois at their rehearsal space in Millstadt. Reaction to the album was all over the place -- hardcore Son Volt fans whined about the absence of the twang and others loved that the band was pushing boundaries and going beyond the stuff they'd already put down.

But when the friction between founders Jay Ferrar and Jeff Tweedy got to be too much, they both walked out and that was it. Uncle Tupelo splintered into two camps -- Jeff Tweedy's Wilco and Jay Farrar's Son Volt -- and 6 months later, Son Volt's debut album was released on September 19, 1995.

It's a landmark record in many ways. While not a commercial success, the album cemented Uncle Tupelo's place in the burgeoning alt-country movement and heavily influenced the genre throughout the 1990's and beyond. After Uncle Tupelo dissolved in '94, Farrar went on to form Son Volt, and Tweedy formed Wilco.
