It comes after their monster Shake Your Money Maker and The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion and was recorded during some intense moments between Chris and Rich Robinson. Producer Paul Stacey crafted a "live in the studio" sound and helped the brothers at least get along long enough to lay down some legendary music.

They came back to a fast-changing rock landscape dominated by alternative rock and grunge. They brought in producer Bob Rock -- fresh of Metallica's Black Album and traded their big hair for straight forward, organic rock. The album sold over 2M records, even more globally and cemented the Bon Jovi as a rock group legend.

It's the first without founding drummer Bill Berry who retired to the farm. Stipe, Buck and Mills were forced to reinvent the creative process and shifted from their jangle alt rock to an experimental electronic soundscape.

The chemistry with Jordan was so thick it was easy for even Charlie to see who should step in if ever needed.

We hadn't heard anything quite like this before -- an acoustic guitar, sax, a violin, an upright bass and some jazz-influenced drumming helped bridge folk, rock, jazz and jam band sounds. Steve Lillywhite's production is crisp and captured the band's strength as an organic live band.

Coming on the heels of a highly successful late 90's stretch of critically acclaimed albums, the band decided to pay homage to the artists who influenced and shaped their sound -- but they did so in "The Church Way" -- reverbed guitars, spacy arrangements and the ethereal voice of Steve Kilbey. Be sure to check out their version of Shakey's "Cortez The Killer" and George Harrison's "It's All Too Much."

Uncle Tupelo splintered into two camps -- Jeff Tweedy's Wilco and Jay Farrar's Son Volt -- and 6 months later, Son Volt's debut album was released on September 19, 1995.

BTW -- that's Gary Louris and (still Jayhawk) Mark Olson you hear on backing vocals.
