From 2019, for #FossilFriday, here's a flock of Jeholopterus wheeling and whirling around the early evening air for Jurassic midges. Anurognathids like this were among the most unusual of #pterosaurs, a result of whole-body specialisations to insect hawking. #paleoart #sciart
Against a golden sky and shady red-yellow-green shrubbery, a group of short-faced flying reptiles flap around to chase tiny insects. The three closest of these reptiles have irregular stripes on their bodies and eyespots on their wings, visible to varying degrees depending on their wing posture. Smaller Jeholopterus are silhouetted in the background. The leftmost Jeholopterus flies at us, face-on, showing that the Muppets were invented millions of years ago by evolution and not, in fact, by Jim Henson.

Lets talk about a pterosaur tonight.

Jeholopterus. It was a small anurognathid (short tailed) pterosaur from the Middle to Late Jurassic (and possibly into the Early Cretaceous but that is debated) and lived in what is now China.

These little guys had a very bat like appearance.

Continuing my recent trend of #Yanliao beasties, here's an updated, more serious attempt at #Jeholopterus for #FossilFriday!!! The camouflaged colouration is based in #Ginkgo bark, which would have grown in contemporary forests.
