Katsukawa Shunsho (1783)

Yukawa compared BABYMETAL with ningyō jōruri (人形浄瑠璃), and early form of bunraku, where the dolls are backed by shamisen players. In this framing, the three BABYMETAL singers are the dolls, and the musicians behind them the shamisen players.

In this 1914 artwork, Uemura Shōen portrays Akizuki Miyuki, the tragic protagonist of the drama Shō-utsushi Asagao-banashi. Shōen was celebrated for her ability to imbue bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) with a sense of internal dignity and emotional depth.
