Aby se pak mohl plně naložený Boeing 747 zvednout i z letišť s vysokou teplotou a/nebo nadmořskou výškou (kde proudové motory ztrácí tah kvůli nižší hustotě vzduchu), disponují JT9D systémem vstřikování vody. Ten umožňuje krátkodobě zvýšit tah až o 15 %.

Jednou z hlavních ingrediencí úspěchu byly dvouproudové motory Pratt & Whitney JT9D. Ty se staly vůbec prvními motory s vysokým obtokovým poměrem v civilní službě, a oproti starším agregátům nabízely nejen vyšší tah, ale také až o třetinu nižší spotřebu paliva.

One of my favorite cases is a civil forfeiture fed case that’s like U.S. v. JT9D-7R4G2 where one of the underlying details was that the airframe originally tied to the engine may have been broken up for scrap despite liens on it.

Ephemera: They re-used a 747-200 model from another film, which results in the AF1 depicted here incorrectly having Pratt & Whitney JT9D engines rather than the General Electric CF6s that were actually installed on the planes still used as the presidential transport.

And even if they could find 4 Pratt JT9D-7A engines, which have been out of service for decades, you need special cranes and mounting hardware to hoist the shuttle to place it on the 747’s, and I’m not sure any of that exists anymore either.
