#justinian
JUSTINIAN, by H.N. Turteltaub (who looks a bit like me), is about Justinian II (685-95, 705-11), whose regnal years only suggest his...lively career. NB: This isn't about the more famous Justinian I (527-65).

Porphyrios the Whale, mortal enemy of Justinian & Theodora 👇
mine will always be the sperm whale who reacted to a Roman soldier throwing a bottle at him off the Byzantine coast by sinking every ship he could off that coast for the next 60 years and had the emperor declare him an enemy of the state and name him after the Titan who attacked mount olympus
About once a week I think fondly of my personal icon, the elephant who trampled a woman and then came back later to trample her some more at her funeral.

Justinian couldnt even defeat a whale
Justinian himself also fits neatly into the category of "strategic idiot" if not exactly huge loser
IDK about a huge loser but a bunch of the guys who get written up as The Last Of The Romans from Stilicho to Aetius to Belisarios have fairly mixed records

Ruins of the “Cistern of Justinian” at Fenerbahçe/Kadıköy

This large cistern was rediscovered in 2016 (it was documented in the previous century). It probably supplied water to the nearby Palace of Hiereia (on Fenerbahçe Peninsula), which was built by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century

Drop something gold.

The cover for JUSTINIAN, by H.N. Turteltaub, who looks a bit likeme. The goldpiece was issued by Justinian II (685-95, 705-11). As his regnal years suggest, he had a...lively career.

this is why you shouldnt believe what you see on the internet. It was actually closer to 50 years. His name was Porphyrios, he actually caused the creation of entirely new trading routes just to avoid him and was declared enemy of the state by Justinian. He is the hero we need.
Wasn't there a whale that took a hating to Rome and sunk a bunch of ships for like 10 years?

I'm sorry, but I just do not believe that 32% of US adults know who Justinian was, let alone have an opinion about him one way or the other
Cleopatra is the single most popular ancient figure* among Americans. Big potential support base for the "attractive maniac" candidate

* they didn't poll for Jesus, but to be fair I suspect he'd take the crown.
