As best I can figure it out, I think this is what the median voter wants—
(1) border sealed, very difficult to cross illegally
(2) anyone with a criminal record deported
(3) legal status for non-criminal workers, but no right to access the welfare system

what people seem to believe is that there is a large number of criminal, layabout immigrants who can be easily found and deported. they support doing so snd are dismayed by the deportation of otherwise law abiding people. the problem is that the criminal group is imaginary!

this is the kafala system.
It depends on the immigration system. The UK should have a UAE style immigration system - work permits for a defined period, no citizenship or permanent residency, and no rights to bring dependents unless you meet a salary threshold. The Gulf countries have no shortage of workers in their hospitals.

Yes and if you push them they're often quite open they want a kafala system with no route to citizenship. Which is why they're all so obsessed with the "Boriswave".
I think it's key to understanding their worldview that they imagine a world not *without* immigrants, but one in which immigrants' inferiority is permanently asserted and they become a subservient caste. All these people worship the Gulf States.
What is the right-wing vision for a world where immigrants have been deported and public services cut? Care and other services would dry up. The return of living in squalor for those beyond working age? The workhouse? The pauper’s grave?

What sticks out to me in the comments section is that even readers of the FT, I would probably argue a more informed segment of the country than average, are arguing for solutions such as: no benefits for asylum seekers, a salary threshold for new migrants, which are already in place.
