23/ Probably not very long, given that sea otters seem to have a fossil record going back 0.6 Mya. Canopy kelps, on the other hand, seem to have diversified during the middle Miocene, putting a maximum age on kelp forests of about 10-15 Mya (based on molecular clock dating from Starko et al.)
