'The fiddlers are all thumbs,
Or the fiddle-string accursed,
The drums and the kettledrums
And the trumpets all are burst,
And the trombone,' cried he,
'The trumpet and trombone,'
And cocked a malicious eye,
'But time runs on, runs on.'

More than a "small song moment" but... the "Et in terra pax" ("And peace on earth") from Bach's B-minor Mass, which starts off hushed and, well, peaceful, then slowly builds into joyousness and finally, with trumpets and kettledrums, to full-blown confidence in the possibility of a better world.

Kettledrums, kettlebells. Tomato, tomahto if you're a timpanist in the 1740s.

Most composers see a pair of timpani and think: lovely, that'll do.
Christoph Graupner saw a pair of timpani and thought: more.

I love that kettledrums are specified.

It's interesting: I've been reading both languages, pretty faithfully, until "To be or not to be"... Only the English would do. And I'd forgotten how many times the word "nunnery" appears.

Last of the (many) art photos I took. I am still blown away by the sheer level of skill and art that went into these houses. I thought they were richly decorated when I visited Pompeii yesterday but seeing some of the high quality stuff that was removed. Just wow.

OED defines 'nakers' as 'kettledrums' (surely much bigger and not played by hand nor knocking together). 1st recorded use in Chaucer's Knight's Tale (c.1385)
