#Kinkeeping is not nostalgia—
it is survival; a refusal to
let history fray at the edges.
Through shared stories
shared vision, shared light—
we keep each other from
fragments or objects
we call our connection kindred

Wow, I didn't read that the right way on the first try.

So... he created a platform for kinkeeping. shit. why doesn't someone give me 6 million dollars for remembering things about the people I like and love.

It’s not until adulthood that you realize that all those magical childhood holidays, birthdays, vacations, and family traditions were the result of hours of work & tons of mental energy by (usually) moms.

She found this article on “kinkeeping,” a word I hadn’t heard, but an activity that I do, in fact, do a tremendous amount of in my extended family, work that I alternately value and resent.

I think it’s both, & those two things are separate (though connected)

Our cognitive load is huge *because* in addition to paid work we’ve the expectation of constant emotional & domestic labor, kinkeeping, dependent care, & vast self-regulation in order to manage the outsourced regulation of others

There's even a term for that.

Women are very often put into kinkeeping roles. Whether it's in a family, a community, or at a job.

In the workforce, for example, who gets to do the unpaid labor of organizing company parties? It's usually the women employees.

Too often, the work of kinkeeping falls fully to women. Which is why I'm especially grateful to have a partner who (like his dad before him) manages the family address book, designs and orders the holiday cards, prints the envelopes, and makes sure that they get sent.

Women are conditioned from almost birth that this is on us.

“Basically, if it’s a task or to-do that maintains a connection and that warm hug of love within a relationship or a group, it’s kinkeeping.”

Do write the article! Grannys are the ones doing the kin work/kinkeeping labour in families, so presumably any emotional connection is to them.

“Kinkeeping is one of those essential forms of labor that most of us don’t notice until it disappears,”

And it falls to women whether they want to do it or not. 1/

Oh god and I still have to figure out the voltage converter.

Shit.

This is why my mom complains. My father takes care of the outdoor work except the gardening (the “man’s” domain) and she has to do pretty much everything inside AND all of the kinkeeping stuff.

You don't have to take your short-comings and monetize it. And maybe recognize that a lot of women have done this shit for you most of your life. Just give women money for all of their fucking unpaid labor in kinkeeping.

I can research the shit out of medical providers, get an appointment where none was to be had & scour pharmacies for elusive ADHA meds.

BUT I draw the line at gift buying for extended family & other kinkeeping expectations.

One can only do so much.
