Likewise, haven’t come across anything as yet which I felt was anywhere near sub-par. It‘s a heartening thought that I’ve still heaps to discover - that copy of ‘Kiteworld’ on the pile there is still unread too!
I imagine I’ll be getting ahead of myself and ordering another one soon too… 🙂

Celebrated author Keith Roberts was born OTD 1935.
Still best known for his superb alternative history novel ‘Pavane‘ - although I was delighted to discover that there’s a whole body of work that‘s equally captivating.
One of the few authors to have ignited the ‘completist’ gene in me.📚📖📚🙂

Pick a passive-aggressive number of books that shaped you. Even if you are indifferent to or despise them now. No explanations.
351/751 Keith Roberts, Kiteworld (1985) - I did read the belated sequel, Drek Yarman (2000), serialised in the short-lived Spectrum SF, but can remember nothing about it

I loved both Pavane and Kiteworld. Haven't read anything by hime yet I didn't like a lot.

Mind you, anything by Keith Roberts is worth your while.

Chalk Giants is like Pavane and Kiteworld: a collection of linked stories showing a strange and messed-up world changing. Personally loved all three.

If ever there was a British writer due for a reappraisal or rediscovery, it’s Roberts.

I have Kiteworld, and nearly read it recently, but will very likely tackle it in 2026.

See also Kiteworld, similar tone, slightly more fantastical.

And very nice it is too! There’s a striking simplicity to his style - great eye for composition as well. I believe he was very exacting with publishers about the cover art for his later books (Kiteworld in particular as I recall).

Agreed. From the Kiteworld book, absolute classic.

A fine haul there. Roberts’ Kiteworld is definitely in my sights this year 👍

Very pleased with today's science fiction acquisitions in Cumbria today: Keith Roberts, Edmund Cooper, Bob Shaw, and Kingsley Amis' classic critical work New Maps of Hell.

I remember reading Kiteworld and thinking it was almost as good.

Fantastic book, read three or four times, also enjoyed a couple of other of his books, Kiteworld and one about giant wasps or bees, The Swarm?

Kiteworld、3章までほぼ人様に読んでもらえるくらいに推敲できました。残りは退職後にもうちょっと力入れる方向で。

Kiteworld is also well worth a read.

Books I read in March. To that you can add a couple more HG Wells and an Elric, none of which I own in actual book. Damn good month. #scifibooks #sciencefiction
