Femme à la tête de roses (Woman with Head of Roses) by Salvador Dalí (Spanish) - Oil on panel / 1935 - Kunsthaus Zürich (Switzerland) #womeninart #fineart #surrealism #art #SalvadorDalí #Dalí #oilpainting #KunsthausZurich #womensart #dali #artwork #SalvadorDali #surrealart #KunsthausZürich #bskyart
First shown in color in the September 1935 issue of “Harper's Bazaar,” this painting testifies to Dalí's connections to the Parisian fashion and interior design scene. In the background is an allusion to Arnold Böcklin's “Die Toteninsel” (Isle of the Dead). Sometimes called “Woman with a head of roses”, “Venus with the head of roses” or “Female Figure with head of flowers”, this peculiar female character was created in one the most creative time of Dalí’s career, when Dalí developed his personal interpretation of Surrealism and created some of his most celebrated works. This period of intense creativity corresponds with Dalí’s introduction to the André Breton’s Surrealist group and the beginning of his intimate relationship with his lifelong muse Gala who he married in 1934. The painting “Femme à la tête de roses” contains ordinary, symbol-laden objects that defined Dalí’s dreamlike work. This painting is one example of Dali’s use of substitution of heads with other objects. For some art historians, flowers in this painting represent a distaste for rich people that was common among the Surrealist group. For others, the piece is influenced by elegant fashion illustration and design, especially in regards with the second woman in the painting, facing the main protagonist. Another interpretation, cohesive with other works by Dalí at the time, is related to sexual symbolism. Roses can not only symbolize femininity but also female sexuality. Several sketches and lithograph of the “Woman with the head of roses” from the 1930s can be found, but this is the 1935 painting acquired by the Kunsthaus Zürich in 1964.

I just read the Pipilotti Rist interview in Monopol, which reminded me of the “Pixelwald” exhibition at Kunsthaus Zürich—a magical experience. I had also seen the Marina Abramović retrospective there. It was simply a fantastic day.

Kadinsky and Münter right next to each other show how similar yet very different their style is. Who influenced whom to what degree? Was one the creator the other the imitator? What I immediately noticed? Find out in the next post (1/2)⬇️

“Au lit” (In Bed) by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French) - Gouache on cardboard / 1892 - Kunsthaus Zürich (Zürich, Switzerland) #WomenInArt #HenrideToulouseLautrec #ToulouseLautrec #KunsthausZurich #EmilBuehrleCollection #arte #artText #FrenchArt #kunst #Lautrec #gouache #PostImpressionism #1890sArt
Painted in 1892, this work belongs to the period when French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was closely observing life in Parisian maisons closes, not only their public spectacle but their ordinary, off-duty moments. Rather than turning women into fantasy, he gives them rest, closeness, and emotional presence. Two women lie close together in a narrow bed, their bodies mostly hidden beneath thick white sheets and a pale blanket that rises in soft folds around them. Only their heads, shoulders, and bare arms are visible. The woman at left has auburn hair and a fair, rosy complexion. She turns inward with a relaxed expression. Opposite her, the second woman, also light-skinned, nestles into the bedding with face on a pillow in profile. Their gazes meet quietly. Behind them, a warm striped wall in red, orange, and brown presses close to the picture plane, making the space feel intimate and enclosed. Lautrec uses quick, economical strokes and powdery color to flatten detail while preserving tenderness so that the white linens glow, the flushed skin feels alive, and the whole scene seems suspended between night and morning. Nothing here performs for an outside viewer. The mood is hushed, private, and strikingly gentle. The picture’s power lies in its restraint. There are no dramatic gestures, no anecdotal props … just the quietness of mutual attention. Many viewers read the scene as one of female intimacy and possibly queer intimacy. The painting could equally be about companionship, fatigue, trust, and the fragile shelter one person can offer another. Lautrec, an aristocrat who lived on the margins of physical and social norms, often painted performers, workers, and sex workers with unusual sympathy. Here he replaces voyeurism with tenderness. The bed becomes less a site of display than a small protected world, where affection survives the commerce and noise of modern Paris.

Portrait Ilona mit Maske (Portrait of Ilona with Mask) by Johann Wilhelm von Tscharner (Swiss) - Oil on canvas / c. 1926 - Kunsthaus Zürich (Switzerland) #womeninart #mask #art #oilpainting #fineart #KunsthausZürich #artwork #maskedwoman #why #portrait #JohannWilhelmvonTscharner #womensart #swissart
This provocative painting by Swiss artist Johann Wilhelm von Tscharner depicts a young woman named Ilona in a formal, yet humble, pose wearing an azure blue gown with her eyes veiled by a black mask. It is a simple scene that stirs not-so-simple questions about "why are her eyes and nose covered?" and "why is she calmly standing in the center of the an empty room with her hands casually clasped in front of her?" Our attention is solely on her without any other distractions while she directly faces towards us with a slight tilt of her head to her right. The woman, appearing to be of European descent, stands in a stately posture, wearing a rich, blue gown with a cream-colored lace-trimmed neckline and cuffs plus a matching head bonnet covering her dark brown hair. Her expression is serene or thoughtful suggesting a contemplative or perhaps mysterious mood ... completely enhanced by the black mask with "Ilona" faintly printed across it. Her feet are together, wearing black hosiery and elegant black shoes which gives a sense of completeness to her outfit. The visible brushstrokes, particularly noticeable in the smooth application of color across the gown and the subtle gradations of color in her skin contrasts with a noticeable lack of detail in the background and in the clothing's ornamentation. The lighting creates a sense of quietness and perhaps a slight melancholy as the focus remains entirely on the woman. Johann Wilhelm von Tscharner (actually born in Lemberg, Austria-Hungary) was a Swiss painter that primarily painted still lifes, family portraits, and landscapes; however, this painting from the 1920s came at time when he found inspiration in the works of Jean-Baptiste Siméon Chardin to seek a balance of form and color through muted colors featuring people in dark-toned portraits, as if through a veil. Perhaps within that style, von Tscharner, gives us the answer to our questions -- not only is Ilona masked from seeing clearly, but so are we.

why i love art museums: these paintings were in sequence. it’s a section on fauvism but it starts with impressionist paintings to illustrate (without words) how impressionism developed into fauvism and later into even more facets of expressionism.
