My grandmother passed away this morning at age 98(ish). Here’s a few initial thoughts I posted on Facebook because my uncle forced my hand, but it’s hard to describe the mix of grief, relief, and sadness I’m currently feeling as all I’ve ever known is being her carer/translator/home help.

My grandmother, Sirilarp Pourtham, passed peacefully in her bed this morning at 98-100 years old (more on that later). Although she was never was able to learn English aside from a few short phrases, she still managed to raise me as a small child in London while my mother was working away. As my uncle has decided to post on social media the second he found out from us to seem like an attentive son even though he hasn't actually been an active part of her life in decades, here are some jumbled messy thoughts that I hoped I would have more time to process, but it is what it is - putting them down here so I don't forget. My grandmother was, as is everyone, a very complicated person. She was one of 12 siblings, and the final remaining one. Her official birthday was 18th November 1927, but she said her actual birthday was 13th November 1926. Her father in rural Lampang, Thailand was very late in registering her birth, and she procrastinated as an adult and never got it corrected because she didn't realise everything would become digital in the future. So, like the royal family, she maintained two birthdays throughout her life. This did make things slightly difficult in her old age when medical professionals would ask her to confirm her birthday and she would just give her real birthday to the confusion of everyone in the room. Up until the last few months, she fed herself, dressed herself, and bathed every day with the help of her two dedicated carers. She kept the majority of her teeth and needed no medication. She was born with one kidney, survived TB in her 20s, and cervical cancer in her 80s. My grandmother was mostly housebound save for a few trips out, but found joy in watching her Thai lakorns (soap operas), and was more up to date on Thai slang than I was! She liked to watch the same episodes of the same lakorns over and over again, ate the same foods every day, and wore the same clothes over and over again because she was a bit funny with textures. In retrospect, I have several neurodivergent conditions and so does my mother, and it had to come from somewhere, so I suspect she probably was autistic too... It's probably no surprise, given all of this, to learn that she hated anything remotely medical (one time I had to trick her into going to the dentist by telling her she was going to go to the hairdresser), was extremely stubborn, and held grudges a mile wide. She remained lucid and kept her memories until the end. If she liked you, she would call you over to tell you about something she held against someone from 1970, for example, and when she learned her her ex-husband died in 2020 - they divorced in literally 1960 - she told me that he had died first because of all the bad karma he had done to her during their marriage. She didn't appreciate me telling her that it had nothing to do with karma because they were both in their 90s. I half think spite was keeping her alive for so long, and I know how lucky I am to have had her for as long as I did. Well, grandma, you did it. All your enemies are dead now so it's time for you to go in peace. I promise I'll look after mum and everything will be okay for us. [Imagine I'm saying all this in Thai as of course, she never spoke English and my Thai writing skills suck] My uncle Pan, her favourite son, died earlier this year which we weren't able to tell her given her frailty, but a couple of days ago she was saying she was dreaming of him, so I like to think he was welcoming her home. I don't have many photos of her in recent years as she hated getting her picture taken but here's a selfie we took together last year.

Hodgepodge suits me 😄 My WIP uses the trope of characters too caught up in the criminal underworld to escape. There is some action but mostly it's characters & psychological. Draws heavily from Thai (tears & laughs = both) lakorns (evening telly dramas) & doesn't fit western genres.

Threw this together last night, unedited, helps make a threat real but adds significant unintended consequence post-novel if I use it. Wichai is a psychotic drug-addicted 'crime boss' who uses most words as expletives. Those named work for him. Set in the Thailand of lakorns.

“You can pick locks?” Golf asks as he opens the door to Wichai’s office. Ryu nods. “We, uh…” “It’s ok kid, you don’t have to tell me what you did.” The teenager looks relieved. Golf points him to the deep file drawer at the base of their boss’ desk. “Can you get this one?” “Yeah, easy.” A minute later, Ryu has the drawer open. It’s full of large brown envelopes, each with a date. “Fuck.” This can only mean one thing. Golf empties an envelope and rifles through its contents - twenty photos of himself, who he drinks with, where he eats, entering and leaving the building where he lives. He picks up another, this one is Talay’s life. Petch, Wat, Pod, Trai. His own again. Ryu is silently going through the upper layers, looking for himself. Golf digs down deeper, what was his name? That one who was shot in a gunfight, that Trai replaced. He’d repressed those memories. Wichai’s bedroom door slams open. “WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU BASTARDS?” Ryu panics and shuts the drawer too hard. Its thump sounds through the room. “ARAI WA?” Wichai shouts in the hall. The door knob rattles. Golf points to the window. Wichai pounds on the door. “SHOW YOURSELF YOU COWARDS. WHO ARE YOU?” “Go around to the front, ask him what he wants for dinner and get yourself out of here to get it, okay? Ryu nods and disappears through the window. Golf closes it behind him and straightens the curtains. In the hall outside, Wichai stumbles and falls. “GUN, I NEED A GUN, WHO’S GOT A FUCKING GUN FOR ME YOU BASTARDS?” Oh fuck. Who knows how many in the horde are carrying. Golf checks that the drawer is closed, and hopes that Wichai doesn’t think to check it’s locked. He listens at the door as the tyrant’s curses recede down the hall. One hurdle down, he heads after him. “I DON’T WANT DINNER, I WANT A GUN. DID YOU FUCKIN BEGGAR STEAL MY GUN?” Shit. Golf hurries to the front hall. Ryu cowers as Wichai roars at him. “But why do you want a gun, Khun Boss, khap?” Golf asks, keeping his tone calmly polite. Wichai’s eyes are bloodshot and unfocused as he turns to his senior bodyguard. “My office. Someone’s in my fucking office. I’m going to kill that lizard.” When he goes quiet, sometimes he’s even scarier. “There’s no one in your office, Khun Boss, khap.” Ryu speaks up. “There couldn’t be anyone there. We were keeping guard for you.” “Come on, let’s go look.” Golf leads the way back to his boss’ private wing, keeping a steady stream of reassurances going. At the door, he asks WIchai what he heard. “CRASH, like a tiger is in there. Must be Empire lizards, a whole army.” Under that cover, Golf unlocks the door that isn’t locked with his key. “See,” he says, opening it wide. “No one’s here. Maybe you were remembering a dream.” “Mai chai, mai chai. It was here. I heard it.” “No one’s here, it was a dream.” Confused, Wichai looks around. He walks into the room and back out. “Now let’s get you dressed and ready for your night.” “I’M NOT A CHILD. I CAN FUCKING DRESS MYSELF.” Wichai storms off into his room. Ryu slips in to lock the desk drawer again, while Golf stands guard. Crisis averted, for now. But those photos. A drawer full of photos of all of them. The fucked-up monster who won’t let them go has photos of them all.

The characters aren't imagining it, that would be quite a twist 😊 The setting is me riffing off of lakorn tropes about organised crime, its social dynamics, the people involved. So it's a couple layers removed from reality 😄
I always say "set in the Thailand of lakorns" but people miss that.

My WIP is set in the Thailand of lakorns, their evening telly dramas, and strongly influenced by their context- and emotion-driven ways of telling stories. Characters caught up in an imagined criminal underworld means secrets and things they do not, sometimes cannot say, and also danger. Suspense

My secret wish is to be able to write a proper Thai ghost movie story, the way they work with emotions is fantastic.

Immense respect for the storycraft in the best lakorns and how they integrate umpteen moving parts, including all of the emotions, into a coherent whole.

in a time & culture (1940s-50s Thai Chinese) which allows that only through the men in their lives. The story craft is superb. Melodrama, so plenty of excitement. M/M and a sweet het romance too.
