It’s called ninja because the scientist who discovered it was explaining her discovery to family at Thanksgiving and then her young cousin shouted “ninjas are cool, call it the ninja shark!”

The ninja lanternshark is so named because
A) like other lanternsharks it glows in the dark,
and
B) my colleague who discovered it was told by her young cousin that “ninjas are cool, you should call it a ninja shark!”

This is a velvet belly lanternshark! These guys can dive to a depth of 2000 m/6561 ft!
Everything is dark and spooky there because sunlight doesn't penetrate these depths 🖤

1) The commonly cited smallest shark is the dwarf lanternshark (which like all lanternsharks can bioluminesce), but there are a few that small. It's under a foot long!
2) Yes (plankton are animals). Though bonnetheads can also digest seagrass

My favorite is the ninja lanternshark, named because @vickyshark.bsky.social ‘s young cousin said “ninjas are cool, call the shark you discovered the ninja shark”
