And Toraki have changed a lot over the years, they are still recognizably the same. Despite everything, it's still you 🥺 Anyway Toraki gets his shit together by the second half of the trip because if they dont kiss while they watch the fireworks during Lanyuan New Years I'm gonna throttle him

He's a wolfdog Ruishou that was born and raised in Pyrarkhe which is why he goes by John but his Lanyuan name is Yunlong so his full Lanyuan name is Lang Yunlong (郎云珑 | 郎雲瓏 (Láng Yúnlóng [lang2 yun2 long2]))

In both Kouraian and Lanyuan, their titles emphasis what they were both known for. In the five languages of Adalheim and Tausenach, they're named after two types of trees due to the sacred nature of trees in Elvari culture: Furana after pine and Eikana after oak

In Lanyuan they are Heilongdalu 黒龙大陆 | 黒龍大陸 (Hēilóngdàlù [hei1 long2 da4 lu4]) for the eastern continent meaning roughly 'black dragon continent' and Bailongdalu 白龙大陆 | 白龍大陸 (Báilóngdàlù [bai2 long2 da4 lu4]) for the western continent meaning roughly 'white dragon continent'

Ruishouzu 瑞兽族 (Ruìshòuzú [rui4 shou4 zu2])- roughly “auspicious beast tribe”; this is another term for Yezhushen but this one is unique to Lanyu. This is where the Common term “Ruishou” comes from for Lanyuan-native animal people, the term Ruishou is the 'auspicious beast' portion of the name

This one shares the first character. The rough literal meaning would be 'many jade', a rather poetic way to refer to the various species that call Lanyu their home. As mentioned before, the exonym (what other people would call someone from Lanyu) is 'Lanyuan'

Also I say read and write but it's more like he's fluent in Common, Kouraian, and KSL. Lanyuan takes him a bit more time to read and write

Quick language lore drop for Toraki, in Wildersong he knows how to speak and read in four languages (Kouraian, Lanyuan, Common, Kouraian Sign Language), and if this story idea sticks, then he picks up a bit of Pyrarkhian later in life too

Kouraian 'Kyujin', Lanyuan 'Qiuren', and Common 'Elvari' all refer to the same species, just within their respective languages. The terms in Kouraian and Lanyuan did not become loanwords in Common as the word 'Elvari' already existed so they are just called Kouraian Elvari or Lanyuan Elvari instead

This leads to an interesting quirk in Common though where Yashugami and Ruishou seem like separate species. In reality, these are two terms for the same species and in both Kouraian and Lanyuan, the characters used to spell their name is the same (野主神)

Kourai and Lanyu are also loanwords for the respective countries but Kouraian and Lanyuan as the demonyms and adjectival forms are the Common versions. In Kouraian, the term would be 'Kouraijin' for someone from Kourai and in Lanyuan it would be 'Zhuyu' (this one requires its own separate post)
