I’ve been thinking about this for a couple of days, and I’ve decided that even though it’s more humane than mass layoffs, asking 60,000 of your employees to quit is a leadership failure.
November 1, 2026 at 2:32 AM
ugh, this is the worst. Layoffs are always a leadership failure.

How bad will the layoffs be that day...
The Verge: Bethesda "is about to announce that the next Elder Scrolls game will officially be called The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel"

Announcement could come soon as next month "during a period that will mark 15 years since The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim was released"

Just a reminder that even though it isn't nearly as dramatic as the video game industry, WotC ALSO enjoys partaking in regular rounds of layoffs

Plus *gestures at entire industry on fire due to AI and layoffs*
November 2, 2026 at 5:55 PM
This suggests the story here is not “AI is boosting productivity”

but

“rate hikes, inflation and other economic uncertainty starting in 2022 caused firms to pull back on hiring, and Big Tech went further in making substantial layoffs long before production-ready AI"

Google’s added 10K hires since March leading to a total of 204K employees at the end of Q3.

This is counter to the broader trend of layoffs across the tech industry.

This confirms anecdotes I’ve heard that while others have been doing layoffs, Google has been cherry picking hires from competitors.

More importantly, if we break productivity down into its components — output & employees — US acceleration since 2022 is primarily a tech layoffs story.

Output stayed on trend, and unlike other sectors/countries where employment flatlined, in US tech it fell and has kept falling in a straight line.

That ending bit sure sounds like corporate speech for "if these shows don't happen, be prepared for another meeting where we announce a whole bunch of layoffs"
