Those intentionally committing scams or frauds have been treated far, far too leniently. Telemarketing, email spam, and telescamming must now be be prosecuted and punished to an extreme degree.

And the Palm Beach police chief thought the state was treating Epstein too leniently, which is why he turned to the FBI.

How interesting that the FBI focused on Epstein and not anybody who was treating him too leniently.

Nuremberg Trials, November 21, 1945.

The parallelism between Adolf Hitler and Donald Trump is frightening. In 1923, Adolf Hitler led a failed coup. He was treated leniently. Germany moved on. A decade later, he was elected, and the atrocities of the world ensued. We must not move on.

For what it's worth, my prediction is that Pope Leo won't treat the society as a whole anywhere near as leniently as JPII and Benedict did; I think he's going to use this as an opportunity to get rid of a major thorn in the Church's side. But I could definitely be wrong!

"Even the assassins, if they were of the Right and their victims democrats, were leniently treated by the courts or, as often happened, helped to escape from the custody of the courts by Army officers and right-wing extremists."

6/ It argues that the Soviets treated the Baltic states too leniently and implicitly suggests taking a much more brutal approach, which would most likely replicate what is being seen in Ukraine with the inhabitants being driven out and their languages and cultures suppressed.

I'm deleting the sakurai RT stuff because it seems there was a lot of mistranslation sensationalization at play, but I still feel it's a little uncomfy to talk too leniently about AI right now

I read that, and yes it is wrong that driving offences are treated more leniently. It doesn’t mean litter isn’t a problem, it means society tolerates bad driving far too readily,

i do find it interesting to mull what exactly a "restorative" approach to someone in the current, specific circumstances of Jacob Geller—a microcelebrity with a decent audience perpetrating one (leniently punished) act of sexual assault ten years ago—is, could, or would actually be in practice

And you may say “well people with more privilege will lead here” but they’ll be treated leniently and such treatment will be held up as the system acting in a way that is “fair” where only the “dangerous” are locked up.

imagine if courts treated everyone else as leniently as these white collar males. If a man who assaults Aboriginal children can be released into the community… the prisons we could close! The trauma we could prevent! The resources we could reinvest in community!

It's deeply fascinating to me that the endpoint of conservative populism is "elites should do whatever they want, you poors get treated too leniently." We're right back in 80s Reaganism!
I am old enough to remember when Republicans' contention was that the elites could get away with anything, like Hillary Clinton. So we had to elect Donald Trump to fix that. Now their contention is the elites *can't* get away with anything!

And sheriffs, which is the one that I can't get my head around. "If I vote for you and fund your campaign, look leniently upon me" is surely one of the most straightforward corruption pathways ever devised.
