This phenomenon, known as gravitational lensing, occurs when a massive foreground object's gravity bends spacetime, magnifying and distorting the light passing through it.

The observation is part of a series of Hubble images helping astronomers prepare for NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope.

one of the things that’s so impressive about Einstein & relativity is not just that it totally upended our very intuitive understanding of physics, it immediately was used to estimate some weird things that we have since been able to observe, like gravitational lensing

At least Taika has never, to my knowledge, referred to "lensing a flick."
Taika’s got what I’ve come to think of as Kevin Smith disease: basically owes his career to critics championing his early work, gets the bad reviews his later films deserve, and tries to blame it on critics. It’s not our fault you lost your fucking fastball, dude!

Awesome these lensing effects!
What else could be distorted from the light we see?

Mind bogglingly awesome ❤️
Why are they stretched? Or is that gravitational lensing as well?

Riddle: What acts like a ghost & a skeleton?

Dark matter!

It’s invisible, but its interactions with gravity hold galaxies together. In the Bullet Cluster's mergers, dark matter (blue) was unfazed, like a ghost through a wall 👻

Gravitational lensing is a neat test of general relativity. The cluster's mass bends spacetime, so it acts like a giant magnifying glass for galaxies far behind it.
